Engineering/Technician Jobs in the South East?
Discussion
I've posted similar topics a couple of times over the last 18 months, so I'm sorry if you're getting sick of me! But I'm getting quite desperate and nothing seems to be working! I'm hoping someone who didn't see my last posts may see this one and be able to help me out!
I am a 27 year old aircraft engineer working at Gatwick Airport. We have been really struggling over the last 18 months, either on furlough or in work on very reduced pay. Up until this point, there have been very few redundancies, but unfortunately, under the current circumstances, the company are looking to offload a bunch of us for 6 months on unpaid leave over this winter. I'm fairly sure I'll be one of the ones selected for this, so I am very actively looking for new roles and opportunities outside of aviation.
My qualifications are:
Does anyone know of any good companies/roles that may be hiring, or are expected to be hiring in the near future? I have looked at the obvious choices, HGV driving, etc, but courses near me are very booked up and expected to take months to complete. Unfortunately, I am looking for something a bit shorter notice. I have also looked into the idea of buying a cheap old van and offering my services to my local area, removing garden waste, doing odd jobs, transporting stuff, etc, but don't know how viable or secure this
will be over the Winter.
Any help would be really appreciated!
Thank you!

AWE could have some openings that you might be suitable for.
The working environment is not for everyone, they are basically a paperwork manufacturing facility with an occasional sideline in nuclear defence
but they look after you there and the pay range for some of the jobs you could be qualified for is similar.
Unlikely to be made redundant either what with Boris raising the stockpile cap and the upcoming replacement warhead.

That looks really good but unfortunately about 60 miles away from me.The working environment is not for everyone, they are basically a paperwork manufacturing facility with an occasional sideline in nuclear defence

I recall your last post and the advice I gave was to check the simulation companies as the simulators work using the same systems as the aircraft you are on so they actively look for aircraft technicians

There is also Boeing and CAE that have simulator centres on the Manor Royal.
Bear in mind that a lot of the airlines and relates companies went for redundancies instead of furlough. With headcounts slashed to either nothing or minimum numbers when flights returns to more normal they will be understaffed and will need to up their numbers of staff and recruit again.
I know a couple of aircraft enginneers that were made redundant in lockdown 1 were told that when it all "blows over" they can come back to the jobs.
I don't think they expected it to last this long but the company have reiterated the promise throughout.

Transferable skills perhaps? I work for a very large pump company/manufacturer - booster sets, heating cooling etc and we are recruiting all the time for field service engineers in the south east.
Paid travel, fuel, van, and with overtime and call outs similar money to what you’re on once a 6 month probation/training period is completed.
Message if you’d like any more info, sure you would be over qualified and you might not fancy it but it’s good stable work.
