Well that was obvious...

People who got a dog during lockdown are looking to give them up for adoption / re homing.

Working from home for months does lull you into a false sense of an idyllic life with a cute puppy, but returning to work combined with a growing dog needing more exercise is the reality.

Doggy day care is a thriving business if you have the land.

I wonder how the couple of hundred strays we brought in from Afghanistan are getting on...

I was quite shocked how quickly a large amount of people suddenly wanted a puppy and were prepared to pay several thousand pounds for one. Like you say, suddenly everybody was at home all the time so they had plenty of time to look after it.

Did these people honestly think this would be the new normal and they would never be required to leave their houses ever again? Or have they got bored of them now they are not cute little puppies any more and this is yet another reason to get rid of them?

People are retarded.

In the early days, animal charities were overwhelmed by dumped pets as people, being dumb as fk, dumped their pets for fear of them spreading covid.

Then went out and bought loads of new pets when that fear subsided,

Now dumping them again as its "hard work" or "expensive" to keep a pet.

I really wish covid had a decent fatality rate, something like 80% fatality. Would have weeded out a lot of the scum that infest the planet. Maybe the carnage would have given the human race enough of a shock to change their ways, or at least buy us another 50 years to change.

I imagine as well many new owners have bought inappropriate breeds for their lifestyles based purely on how they look.

Many dogs need a couple of hours exercise a day at least, if not more.

Its true, iv been offered a year old English bulldog for free and a golden retriever for free within the last 2 months by 2 people who know i was after a dog. The bulldog didn't look healthy and thought she was at it and the other was an alcoholic who would have wanted "free vodka" for life because she gave a dog away because she couldn't handle it anymore. Actually considered saving the retriever but again I never had trust it wouldn't have strings attached. Prices are also coming down now, still high but dropping.

I was shocked at just how greedy many Dog sellers were during lockdown.

Sadly our old Dog died last May and we were looking for a new one, I was gobsmacked at the money-grabbing opportunism on show.

Ended up paying more than we should have but he'll be part of the Family for life and, I suppose you can't really put a price on that.

People rarely fail to disappoint and I am afraid all too many of us saw this coming a long way off.

Not too long ago I saw a few adverts for people trying to sell their dogs they had got during the lockdown for not far off what they had paid for them like a used car, really pisses me off as a life long dog owner. I guess they have realised that doesn't work and have resorted to giving them away now.

Bit harsh... but probably correct.

I’ve seen lots more of what I call “fashion dogs” (french bulldogs that sort of thing). I was half expecting them to get dumped after lockdown as well

I think the sausage is making inroads into being the most fashionable dog.

Some people are just wkers when it comes to animals.

A few years back my mum lost her bull terrier to illness and made her usual statements about not getting another dog, she lasted less then a week without a dog before getting another rescue special bull terrier from Wood Green.

The dog she adopted was 8 years old and had been given up for rescue as she had allegedly snapped at the previous owners baby. Before the dog could be rehomed she had to undergo surgery to remove some suspicious looking lumps and have a tooth removed which would've cost the owners something like £500 at the vets.

Within 5 minutes of meeting the dog she was sitting on my lap with her tail wagging and was happy to let me open her mouth and look at the stitches.

Did that dog ever snap at a child? I doubt it, I think the previous owners didn't want to pay the vet bill.

This is no suprise. I remember last summer hearing how france has the highest number of abandoned pets as many people will go to their summer home..during the summer. This was even worse during last year

Clickbait designed to draw attention to the charity to draw in funds.

For every dog for rehoming locally there's 700 enquiries/offers to rehome.

So dogs aren't suddenly being ditched in massive numbers, if anything people will happily stick them on their own for 10hours with no sense of wkerness

Roughly where do you live? As locally that would equate to about 35,000 people actively offering to rehome dogs based off a single centre nearby... which seems quite a lot.
