As some of you will know I’m now on the lookout for a car to do me a year or so under £4K. I was looking at golfs as had one before but not many are coming up. There seems to be a sea of focus MK3s available mostly zetecs. I won’t buy a eco boom one but happy with the 1.6 petrol or diesel.

Reckon a focus is worth a shot ? Any common issues ?

I ran a 2.0 auto diesel from 40k to 135k, had no issues other than service items, averaged 43mpg so I imagine a 1.6 diesel manual would be higher. But yes I’d recommend, I bought another (a mk3.5 ST).

Petrol yes, diesel less so. How many miles will you be covering?

I've recently replaced my trusty old Mk2 with an early Mk3.5 and love it, much more refined than the Mk2 and still a good steer.

Electric power steering failure. Modules fail and the whole steering rack needs replacing.
Happened to us twice on funny serviced, 40-50k mile cars.
