Can't sell something? Just put the price up.

What on earth is that all about?
If it hasn't sold for x then surely selling it for x and a bit more isn't going to happen.
Couple of examples on my ebay watch list:
Number plate, it was £4300, then get a random offer for £3700. Obviously didn't buy it, now its up for 5k
Rolex milgauss, was up for 5.5k about a year ago. Today it sits at 7.4k
Seen it with cars, houses, all sorts of stuff.
Usually when i cant sell something i lower the price

You see this all the time on the used car threads.
Someone will refer to, for instance a BMW M3 advertised at £4k.
Someone will point out that's very cheap so there must be something wrong.
So if the advertiser had put it up at £6k it would have been a better bet.
Maybe the guy has no idea or simply needs the money fast.
Just because it's less than one might expect it doesn't follow that its crap.

Simple logic, most people who respond to classified ads are the bottom feeders. If I'm selling my 05 Mercedes Benz S55 AMG for $8500 and get emails (usually arriving between 1am and 4am) offering $1500? I'm not sure what kind of crack they're smoking ( although it's probably tax payer subsidized given the current environment). Maybe if I raise the price to $16000, I will get a more reasonable offer? If it hasn't sold for x then surely selling it for x and a bit more isn't going to happen.
