I’m really hoping this isn’t going to cost a fortune having just spent £740 on tyres, brakes and a service…

Car has just started making the sound in the video. Does anyone know what it is?

It’s under acceleration mostly but has been under braking a few times (more the clunk sound rather than the whining sound).

Just under 52,000 miles. Serviced last week (and full service history…first three at VW and last two at a local garage).

Tried a DSG reset and it hasn’t work. Or I’ve done that wrong! No errors/lights on the dashboard.

Are you talking about the click sound, it sounds almost like a small stone hitting a wheelwell liner?

It’s the sound at around five seconds and the. 17 seconds.

The sound half way through is a water bottle falling off the back seat when braking.

I’ll check the wheel nuts.

Ok it’s now completely fked.

Driving home and it losses power. Error pops up saying reverse gear unavailable and ACC not working.

I coast to a layby, turn it off and back on and messages have cleared.

However issue is still there. Louder now.

Now parked in the garage whilst I work out what body parts I need to sell to get it fixed.

Ah bks (Don't sell those by the way). I reckon you might be best getting it looked at by a gearbox specialist. Interested to know the outcome as I think my dsg gearbox is on its way out too (mk5 gti) although mine is more of a grinding noise (think it's a bearing going) rather than a whine.

Edit: mine also has a loud clunking when warmed up, sounds like it's from the rear though, did yours?

I’ve not listened to the noise but the dual mass flywheel can rattle and fail, the clutch packs can fail as can the mechatronic unit. We had a customer who’s 7sp failed while waiting for a parking space, that wanted clutch pack and new mechatronics. We won’t touch them so sent her to a gearbox company and the repair was the wrong side of 3k.

I have a strong dislike for the gearbox

If you don't have PRNDS flashing on the dash then the mechatronic is likely to be functioning fine from an electrical point of view.

However it is essential that you get the ECU codes read, sometimes the box can log a fault with the high/low pressure range on the "fluid pressure adaption" limits which the DSG unit has to operate within. You maybe incredibly lucky and be able to have the dsg fluid and filter changed and be back up running. Speaking of which has your gearbox had it's 40k service?

There is also a oil pump within the DSG unit which if it's on it's way out could be the whining noise you are hearing. If it failing it may also causing a whine from other parts of the gearset due to lack of lubrication.

TLDR - Fault codes & Fluid/filter change before you panic & consider removing the gearbox.
