Latest Maserati Recall
Discussion
Hi chaps.
Mine was done before I traded it. I was also lucky enough to get a guided tour of the largest Ferrari service dept in the world (clue to where I had it done!) and see the work in progress.
Basically there are two metal Box mountings uner the car spaced about 24" apart slightly behind the front wheels following the steering rack.
It's the box mountings that have been discovered to suffer metal fatige. In theory they could shear and leave the steering rack unsupported - making life rather tricky for the driver.
The fix, is that these two mountings are ground off (Angle grinder!!!) and new ones welded in place.
It's a difficult job and certainly requires the car to be up on a ramp for the duration. (So book any other jobs to be done at the same time as it might save you a few quid!)...
Mine took 3 days tom complete (Mon to Weds) but some of that time was due to crowding in the workshop (never seen so many 3200s!). Overall I believe the job is rated at 11hours.
If you need more info drop me a line.
P.S. I'm loving my new Morgan - pics later today I hope.

Just had it done last month (Dick Lovett Swindon, job well done, in for 2 days) told time was about 6 hours, it's sub contracted out to body-shop, the welders have to have attended the special course to carry out the recall.
I assume your steering is the same as it went in :|

Had mine done.
Now the steering wheel was 10% out to the left. Went to the garage to get fixed again. Now it's 10% out to the right. So i'll be talking to them tommorrow about this. Not happy, its very off putting having to steer to the right to go streight on
Mine is been carried out on Monday Chris.
Will let you guys know how I get on ?
Sorry to hear of your experience.
They should have checked your steering before handing the car back .
If mine is not carried out correctly it means a round trip of 150 Miles added to the clock.
Will be making sure they check tracking before hand.
Thanks Chris for your info.
Wish my Dealer was Nearer Sometimes as this is the only downside to owning a Maserati.

Mines back in next week some time, to get the steering wheel zeroed back in. Don't think the service manager was too impressed with there job either!
Sorry to hear that Chris.
Hope it does not put too much milage on your car ?
Also hope they provide you with a decent loan car ?
Pete
The Story so far.
1) car steering is spot on
2) Recall for steering fix
3) Car goes in for fix, steering wheel pointing left when going streight
4) Ask service manager to sort it. Apparently it's sub contracted to body shop.
5) Car picked up on trailer.
6) Car returned with steering wheel pointing Right when going streight.
7) Spoke to Service manager. The body shop claims there was play in the steering column so could not get it to go streight!
8) Car back into dealer today on a ramp to see if rack is damaged (Fixable under warrenty).
Now call me cinical but i can make an assumption that the origanal fix has been bodged and they where expecting me to drive around with the wheel not pointing where i want to go.
There is also the possibility that what i have been told is correct. That somehow a perfect car developed a problem with the steering. Whilst having work done on it's steering.
I will be discussing the results with the service manager today.

Amazing Chris.
I gotta say that every service experience since buying my Maserati has been Poor (in fact I would say its been the worst of any car ownership)
I love the car but not the awful level of service that has gone with it.
I have had my car in for 10 days now and still no answer as to why it is taking so long for this recall to be carried out.
Every time my car has gone in for a service there have been OBVIOUS problems that the garage should have seen but failed to !
Keep us updated on your outcome Chris.

Think i saw your car on Sat parked round the back. Dumb question but did you agree a day to drop it off and dor it to be done by? If so raise hell, if not get it delivered back and book it in for when they can guarentee a time.
There are always problems when my car has gone in : re : level of service which has been none existant.
Plus every time my car is collected its my tyre wear etc and around 160 miles added to the clock. Not a problem if the car was fixed the first time but three times on ??
Maybe Im fussy but when the car is returned three times in 6 weeks with another 480 miles added to my car when the car should have been sorted in the first place.
Re : car parked in Rear :
Was told car was on ramp Sat!
Sorry about change of direction on thread.
Lets hope Chris's car is fixed correctly.

Hi Pete and all,
yes, yes, I am back! and please do not get up....
sorry to hear the problems you guys been experiencing and that had made me reluctant to get my 3200 steering "fixed", especially after hearing the "horror stories" and also learnt that only 2 out of the so 4700+ 3200s experienced this so called problem where a piece of steering metal bracket cracked.
Anyway, my steering is straight and I want to keep it that way. However, I think I must get it done anyway because I may not be allowed to get my warranty renewed.... hmmmm, I think I will give Maranello a call to see if thats true.... if so then they can do the job in a few months time just before winter kicks in.
Bye for now....
Gavin

Just in case anyone is reading this and thinks it's a lemon car. I feel i have to point out that i think the car is brillent and would buy another. Its the best car i have had EVER.
Just the service is still lacking somewhat. I don't expect people to bow and scrape. Just plain honest banter will do me fine. Long as they fix it and i get a cuppa tea while i wait ( Yorkshire bloke
)
Don't let this put you off the car. Maserati are just been carefull about damaging the build quality reputation. It's a very well put togeather car.
