Does anyone know whether it is expensive to fix (by an authorised dealer) the hydraulic tappets of the Variocam plus mechanism?

Any adverse effect if you let the car run with a faulty tappet? Is it safe to do so?

I don't beleive they are expensive. GT One told me that it's worth getting them changed during a service if the car has done over 40k miles (at least on the 993tt).

Only take it to an OPC where you'll receive the best coffee, nice courtesy car too!

Douwe Egberts on tap here lads I'll have you know (but you do have to ask nicely and boil your own kettle).
