Are these plates legal?
Discussion
.. because I've just put a pair on my car!
https://www.ukmetalplates.com

They claim "We guarantee that our metal number plates are 100% road-legal. They possess the highly debated retro-reflectivity property and therefore can be read clearly by flashing speed cameras. Our plates also contain our DVLA-registered postcode and BSAU145d mark, although they are applied user laser technology to make them less obtrusive."
I can't see any particular reason they wouldn't be, but please educate me if otherwise!

I don’t know but I’d imagine it’s a very brave company that puts a BS number on something that doesn’t comply…
Thanks.Checking here (https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-number-plates) they look ok and do have the BS AU 145e stamp.

Those plates are legal (correct font, size, spacing and markings) however there are "4D" plates being sold with BS markings, but which do not meet the required standard - The driver and the supplier are in for a rough time in the near future.
("4D" being the plates that appear to have black letters made from cut perspex in a GCSE Design & Technology lesson)
DVLA have stated that none have been shown to meet the required standard.
Police are enforcing them, albeit with a slow-ish start due to a lack of clarity as to whether the BS marking were genuine - They're not and not the door is open for Drivers and suppliers to be prosecuted.
Another motoring fad that'll attract £100 fixed penalty, or argue your case in court.

The car comes with metal plates (regular ones are too thick to fit in those holders), so I should think it's ok.
Exactly. The mounts are pretty ugly, but I couldn't be bothered to remove them. As you say, standard perspex plates won't fit. Thanks everyone for your replies.

Its remotely possible they are selling plates that don't comply but are putting the BSau145 number on them anyway. That would be pretty stupid though.
Although to be fair, as long as its not obviously illegal, 99% of coppers aren't going to go any further than looking to see if it has the requisite post code, BS number and "obvious" illegal things on it.

It is pretty stupid, and its happening with the 4D plates...Although to be fair, as long as its not obviously illegal, 99% of coppers aren't going to go any further than looking to see if it has the requisite post code, BS number and "obvious" illegal things on it.

When the new rules come in, the 4D plates will be "obviously" illegal. Dead easy for a copper to prosecute the driver and then report the company selling the plates. Assuming they are dumb enough to put the real postcode etc on the plate. I was under the impression that metal plates weren't legal at all and that plastic was the only legal way. Willing to be corrected though and can't be arsed to check.
I'd be astonished if anyone were ever done for them though given the utter lack of enforcement of all things Number Plate'y; illegal fonts; bad spacing; coatings which make them virtually unreadable from more than 20 feet away; missing plates on the front in true chav fashion, etc, etc, etc.
