I am not talking the M6 toll or anything like that. We have a toll-house in our village, which prompted me to think about old toll roads and toll houses.
When I started to drive, their used to be a toll road on the under-cliff at Sandgate, between Hythe and Folkestone (Kent). It used to be a 1.5 old pence. By then it was travelled more as a curiosity than a practical through road.
I believe there is one across a very small bridge upstream across the Mersey. Any other curious toll roads that have survived?

There’s still a private toll bridge in Pangbourne, Berks.

I used to buy a book of passes, discounted to 3p iIrc, for the crossing every day to Reading for work.

Absolute gold mine for the owners.

There's still a toll bridge at Warburton over the Manchester Ship Canal. Been there since 1863 (in another guise). It's 12p each way, or 25p per day. Yearly passes available at about £25-30. Been a while since I worked in Altrincham, but used to go over it every day.

I got stung by that after picking up a car from a dodgy trader nearby (he's in prison now)

Until it’s after hours and the gates are locked open. hehe

It’s the best surfaced piece of road for miles around too!

There's a toll road you can use to avoid the steepest bits of Porlock Hill in Devon.

We thankfully got rid of the tolls on the two bridges over the Severn but I think the Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol is still a toll.

In theory, these pollution zone charges are tolls.

I recently cycled over the Cartford Toll Bridge in Lancashire. I doubt whether the owners will have seen much of the 20p I paid on my phone!
