I don't remember car salesman saying these things so often, but recently every car I've been to view the salesman has said.

"We sold this car to the owner originally and he part-ex'd it back to us"

"The previous owner actually upgraded to the same car" adding "he didn't know what else to get that was as good so bought another".

"We sourced this directly from a main dealer, it came in as a part-ex".

"The previous owner actually runs the owners club, he meticulously maintained it as he was a bit OCD about his cars".

I hear it so often it's not even believable anymore.

owner's now bored of it

"The previous owner actually upgraded to the same car" adding "he didn't know what else to get that was as good so bought another".
this one's now shagged out, and the owner has no idea what to get instead

"We sourced this directly from a main dealer, it came in as a part-ex".
not good enough for approved used. definitely shagged

"The previous owner actually runs the owners club, he meticulously maintained it as he was a bit OCD about his cars".
people in the owner's club know the reg off by heart, and refer to it only by the reg, and feel that it's a "club car" and that effectively they all have some right to it. Do not do anything to it, not even let it get dirty for they will rain down their fury upon you

I hear it so often it's not even believable anymore.

Salesman: "We have another customer who's very interested in this car."

Me: "Yes, he follows me around and pretends to be interested in every car I ever look at. Ignore him; he's just a time waster."

“A credit to the previous owner”

Really? That’s on an advert of an ex car of mine at the moment, at a dealer - and I did awful things to that car!

And so many adverts IN BLOCK CAPITALS

Fully loaded or huge spec gets me on cars which have maybe 1 or 2 options at best.

It's not just car salesman; selling stuff must soften the brain. My house is for sale, and the estate agent actually described it as 'deceptively spacious'. I thought that was just a joke, but apparently not!

As a car salesman myself, I find the conversation about another interested party a very difficult one. You don’t want to appear cliched, but you do have a duty to let each party know.

I just tell the truth (an odd approach to sales, I know), and if the customer thinks I’m trying to spin them a yarn, that’s their decision. Two customers last week obviously thought I was, and by the time they’d called back, both cars were sold to the other customer.

The adverts I don’t mind

But pee off with the balloons I actively avoid any dealer with open tailgates and balloons these days

Can never decide whether ‘deceptively spacious’ is a compliment or a criticism.i.e the house looks underwhelming or the house is really well planned and practical.

The Main Dealer cliche could well be true. Many main dealers have a policy based on age, and so don’t retail some quite nice cars, but pass them down to a good independent. This is especially true of small low mileage stuff like Hondas Micras and small Kias etc.

Local dealer to used the same patter all the time -

When you were buying the car it was - the right spec, the one to have, in demand, won't sit long.

When you traded it in the same car was - off the boil, unloved now, not the seller it once was, hard to find a home for.

Dear me, that one’s as old as the hills, going back to the Dale Carnegie sales courses and manuals. They were much used by the former Rootes Group and I think Volvo at one time maybe as they originated in America. The ploy here is that the junior salesman or woman casts himself as your friend; hence the Sales Manager and even Dealer Principal become the ‘enemy’ to be beaten. The absurdity of this is that the sales person is out for as much as can possibly be wrung from the customer. Why do they still do it? Anyway I’ve not heard ‘back seat never been sat in’ for a while.

Another was ‘ oh dear, we’ve got three of these round the back.’ ..and this was an Opel Manta Berlinetta.

Well, that's better than 'It's tiny' which is what I thought it meant!

Balloons and bunting are a no. Boot open is a freshener or drying interior after wet valet. Careless sellers will stupidly leave ‘em open in poor weather though.
