958 Cayenne PASM off road mode

Hi folks,
I know this is a Cayenne... but on a diesel Cayenne equipped with PASM/air suspension, I see that the PASM automatically switches to "sport plus" mode when the off road mode is selected. I am told by the dealer this is normal but it seems odd to me that for off-roading, it would default to the stiffest damping setting. There is nothing obvious in the manual to explain this behaviour.
Anyone any thoughts/knowledge? I have tried Google but no luck and the Porsche dealer could not explain it either.
