Hi All

I have a VW GOLF auto - MK 4, I've been using 5w40 for years and today was told in Halfords I should be using 5w30

Also is it worth buying a higher premium oil? If so which brand?

Thanks to anyone who knows

It depends on what engine but we tend to use 5w30, its the spec that's important, so 504, 505 507 etc. If it meets that then what you are putting in is fine

Have a look on some online oil checker sites, I would guess 5/40 is fine on an older model like this.

To be fair, the SEAT dealer servicing daughter’s Ateca put the wrong oil in it, and insists they’re right.

A fully synthetic 5w40 is fine, although probably no advantage unless you're flogging it. We stick it in the V8s as they run hot and like a drink.

For road use pop 5w30 in at your next service.

Thank you all
I went for 5w 30 in the end, but I get through alot so would be too late to wait for the next service

Which engine was it? Some absolutely need 5w30, some much prefer 10w40 and burn the 5w30 like it's going out of fashion!
