An elderly friend, now in his eighties, just wishes to know if his old car is still on the road, or is in the process of restoration . I see it is on the DVLA website as last being taxed in the early 1980s
Does he know the chassis number?A lot of XKs are listed on www.xkdata.com
You might also try contacting the XK Club. They have a regular column devoted to tracking down XKs and their histories. See https://www.xkclub.com/

HPi check will give the Chassis number. You can then check if it’s on XKE Data.
JDHT Heritage will also have the chassis number.
If the plate is the original then it’s a Coventry issue.
thank you for all your replies. I will question him further but I know that he was in the RAF and was posted abroad in about 1980 and it had to go although still on the road. I think the guy he sold it to took it away on a trailer for £200....................such was life in the 1980s
Just had another word with the gentleman.
He bought the car in 1966 and is sure that the number plate is original. He bought it from a dealer in Weybridge but cannot remember the name and paid £650 for it.
He sold it in 1972 from a barn at Little Snoring in Norfolk where it was being stored and a gentleman in a Bentley with a car trailer turned up to buy it for £200 in 1972
It was given a new registration book in 1982 but he says that it was not exported.
If anyone can think of any more questions I should ask I would be grateful to hear them!
