We are evidence that life exists in the galaxy, so I see no reason why earth would be the only one.
As for intelligent life, they could be neighbours, but we may never know as the distances would make signals impossible. Lots of variables. We may only discover signals from civilisations that died off millions of years ago!

Planet < star < Solar system < galaxy < universe. There will be life somewhere in the universe, ours can’t be the only planet with an atmosphere given the quantity of suns out there, but we won’t find it for a long, long time and “they” will probably find us first. Our sun is a big star, there are billions off stars out there…
We have absolutely, definitely not been visited by aliens though…

About 25 yrs ago I was on holiday with my ex in her bosses house in Colorado. I was sat outside on the balcony having a ciggie, I was watching the pony trekkers on the side of a nearby mountain and the sky was a clear blue.
A plane caught my eye, you know how they are when at cruising height...just a tiny spec. All was well until it stopped for a few seconds then it disappeared at a crazily fast rate to the way it had just come from. There was no turning circle as there would've been with a fighter and no noise either.
I shot into the house, the ground floor was a huge lounge with an open plan kitchen at one end to tell her what I'd seen but not a sign of her. Searched the place and not a sign of her. Back into the lounge / kitchen and there she was..in the kitchen.
Asked where she had been when I came back into the house as I was shouting her name, she said she'd been in the kitchen and repeatedly asked me what was wrong yet I never saw her at all.
I don't drink so wasn't drunk. Not known for being easily panicked but to this day I'll never understand what I saw.

Life on earth seemed to start relatively early - I think within the first billion years and within a few hundred million of earth being able to support life so that suggests to me that starting life is not that hard if the conditions are right. Given the vast number of stars and planets in the universe then I think it is probable that life exists elsewhere.
Intelligent life requires multicellular life. I think it took more than two billion years for multicellular life to evolve on earth (or at least evolve and survive). That suggests that evolution of multicellular life is not straightforward or likely. That could limit the chances of intelligent life.
I still think there is a reasonable chance that other intelligent life with language and culture does or has existed. I don’t hold out much hope to hear from them unless the universe is teeming with such life as distances are so great that even travel or signals at light speed take hundreds, thousands or millions of years to reach us. How would we even find each other?
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence so I would want more than a few grainy photos or tales of abduction and anal probes before I accepted the existence of UFOs.

You need to read this.

One of the best pages on t’internet - will do a much better job of explaining the options than we’ll do here on a PH thread

Ah, but you would say that, wouldn't you!We have absolutely, definitely not been visited by aliens though…

Did you nick that? If not very good and i agree. Neil deGrasse Tyson has spoken very eloquently on this topic a few times. The likelihood of aliens visiting a planet with a vast amount of cameras constantly filming and satellites tracking what is going on, but there only being grainy pictures and no conclusive evidence, is extremely slim.
Statistically, it is also very unlikely that any life out there will have been able to find us yet, or us find them, as the universe is just so vast. It's like finding a specific grain of sand in a desert.
As for whether there is life I think so. There are also billions of planets in the 'Goldilocks zone' in just our galaxy alone (and so many more galaxies out there). In addition to that, there are planets and moons orbiting black holes or gas giants outside of that Goldilocks zone that could enable life, that even if the odds are a billion to one, there must be other life out there.

Been watching & reading about this subject since I was about 10. There is so much smoke and mirrors surrounding this subject. There are thousands & thousands of witnessed reports, pictures & video. Probably most of those are faked or can be explained. It sounds so crazy to believe alien spacecraft have or are visiting our planet. A tiny portion of those vids & pics simply cannot be explained. But it only takes one to be proven real. Just my two penneth.
Well, life on earth came about from a series of improbable (but not impossible, clearly) events that led to intelligent life.
There's so many stars - no idea how many, but look at the sky on a very very dark night. The visible ones are the closer ones, the sort of background "loom" is a sort of carpet of further ones.
Even getting the Hubble telescope to stare at an apparently empty bit of sky revealed even more galaxies!

So even though the chances of life developing is very low for each case, because there are just so many "chances" it's bound to happen more than once.
It's very unlikely you'll pick the right lottery numbers, yet people still win from time to time!
The thing is, we'll probably never know. Even assuming they would send signals, with the distances involved, they could have lived, evolved, and died of Covid-21 before the first humans existed - and we wouldn't know for the next few millions of years.
As for flying saucers - I'm pretty sure that a some of the stories, although a figment of the imagination of "that guy" at work - have been given publicity, or even encouraged to cover up things like aircraft or weapon tests.

The other maxim is “keep it simple” although I think it is also known as Occam’sRazor. If you have more than one explanation or hypothesis you should prefer the one with the fewest assumptions or contradictions/inconsistencies with your existing knowledge.
Applied to UFOs - requires far fewer assumptions and causes far fewer inconsistencies to accept that UFOs are not aliens eg human’s reporting them are mistaken or lying doesn’t require many assumptions but believing that aliens have arrived but are hiding themselves really well…except for the times they allow individuals or pilots to see them…requires a lot of assumptions and causes a lot of inconsistencies. It can’t be excluded that aliens is the answer but then you fall back on the first maxim that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
