the wife managed to clonk a kerb with the wheel slightly turned the other day... sadly it was in my car. Alloy is now rashed but it has sliced off a thin sliver of rubber from the sidewall. It doesn't seem to have gone deep, and i cannot see any canvas or anything... can i get away with not changing it for a new tyre??

Just looks like the rim protector is damaged. I'd not be too concerned.

I would relegate that to the spare wheel rim.

It's just the rim protection bead.

I'd probably swap it around to hide that part - purely to keep the car looking neat.

Aha - wasn't sure if you knew that photos were not showing yet.

From those 2 uploaded now it doesn't look pretty - but hopefully just the protection strip doing it's job. Presumably no chords etc exposed at the thicker end?

I'd pull it off or glue it down and keep using the tyre!

It's a bit of rubber, not a miracle worker!

Did similar on a car a few years ago, tyre was fine, wore out before it became an issue.

Whilst i'd carry on with it, i would keep an eye on it for any sign of bulging down the line, in case when the kerb impact happened the sidewall got pinched and caused damage to the cords.

You’ll never glue those back, too much flexion.

If you swap it around, the outside part will still be facing outside....So either I don't get it, either.....hum....how to say biggrin

OP, what is important is not to picture the bit that gets out, but what is under that bit: is any ply or cords exposed. I am sure not. Make the OH stress a bit, be a bit mad to her, and then say "it's alright, but take care next time smile"

I'd keep using that. As mentioned above, rim protector. Doesn't look like any sidewall damage/bulge or exposed cords.

Obvs make wife pay for alloy refurb.

She did it once... Might make it twice... And might pay with joint account.
I would consider buying her a shed biggrin

I did with super glue a very long time ago as it was a newish tyre.

Guy at the MOT center (N.I) asked me about it when inspecting the tyres. Said it was fine.

Changed the tyres 18k miles later and it was still ok.

Superglue didn’t work on mine. Again, I left it till the tread depth was down to 2mm (summer, I usually change at nearer 3mm in the rainy season)
