Howdy people,

94 Chim 400. The cabin in me motor is real hot - especially in the passenger footwell (nearly cooked the missus last night hehe).
Now, as far as I can tell the heater is not on (fan control is set to 0 and the hot/cold control switch thingo has the green dot on the green arrow side (far right). Also, I cannot slide this wheel around to the hot side either.... is stuck on the green side - not that i really want to have the heater on anyway, but...

Should the cabin heat up that much?

Did I read something about air vents in the footwell??

Any Ideas to see where this hot air is coming from (and dont say 'the engine' :blah:)

Cheers,
Kempy

The engine... Cos it runs so hot a lot of hot air will work its way into the cabin. You can even feel the heat with the roof off blowing round the windscreen.

Only solution is to drive faster!

I don't see how a smaller front plate will help things...

Drove mine in France and Spain this year in 40oC and still had cold air (same temp as the outside world) coming from the vents... oh, and I have a full size number plate...

Front plate doesnt cover front grill. (see pic in profile) Engone dont over heat either. Stuck in traffic for about an hour in London last night and didnt even reach 90.

Just alot of hot air getting in the cab.... :-(

Also, the leather boot on the gear knob has come away from its housing a bit so hot air frmo the undercarriage is ToAsTiNg the gear knob... Owie, Hot Stuff. Trying to shop around for a place that can do reliable re-trimming.

I never had a problem with my Chim, DustyC did however until he put smaller front plate. If you can get even a little more air flowing over the engine when you are moving, it will assist in keeping the engine running just that little bit cooler. IMHO

"Cold" on a TVR means ambient air temperature usually as measured under the bonnet or the front wheel arches (unless you have a (rare) functioning air-con system. Both of these locations get hot unless you are moving at a good speed (40-50 mph minimum) therefore the cabin always heats up around town.

The passenger footwell may well have a closeable vent that will to some extent mitigate the problem, but closing it means that you don't get the colder air when the car is moving.

I've yet to find a closeable vent in the driver's footwell, but then I haven't looked to hard anyway.

Cheers peeps,

Thanks for the input. I guess the missus can just learn to live with it (think of it as a cheap alternative to a taning salon ha).

Doesnt seem to be so bad in drivers footwell.... Guess im a little more tolerant.

Will have a look for the vents and see what difference closing them makes.

Ta 'yet again'.

I had this problem for a few months when I first brought mine. I had to get right in the footwell and there is a round vent that has to be manualy pushed closed.
No sweaty nads after that!

Possibly your heater controls are bolloxed, and sending hot air only?

Operating temperature is substantially higher than temperatures we experience, so don't seeing there being much of an issue!

The slider operates a cable system inside the dashboard. The cable could have come off on yours and jammed in the hot position even though it is showing cold. Could explain things.

Fibreglass naturally lets more heat through into the cabin than steel so this won't help your cause. My griff gets unbearablely hot with the roof on so unless i really really have to..the roof stays off.

Sometimes the heater control valve sticks open and they are not that reliable at the best of times. Even though my heater cable is OK sometimes the valve does not shut properly and I get hot air from the heater into the cabin. Closing the vents helps but its still a pain. The valve is on the nearside wing under the carpet, pushing it shut manually usually does the trick but you need to remember to do it again if you put the heater to warm.

Well works on mine anyway

Hi There!
I have the same problem, the cabin gets incredibly hot when driving the car! Have just put it down to the fact that 'they all do that', and as I do not have a/c, I need to drive minus the roof whenever possible! Fiancee loves it though as she feels the cold and reckons it is 'just right'!! Oh well........

Assuming that your heater isn't on, I think it's conducting from the exhaust.

Looking at the car on ramps, my understanding is that the huge heat is easily conducted from the exhaust thru the glass.

You can lag it from the manifolds and beyond where it comes close to the fibreglass [near the footwells], as downstream of the insulation, the exhaust that gets even hotter.

Assuming that you're never going to ground the car, you may want to contact demon twaeaks fo rthe right insulation and lag it, or parhaps next time the exhaust is off consider spraying it in insulating enamel, tho don't know it's exact insulating properties. Also when your manfolds need replacing get the ACT decatted ones as [I think] they're insulated.

You also need to talk to someone more knowledgeable than me, as I think that there may be an adverse effect on all three cats and you may burn them out - do get advice, but if you're bothred, I'd consider insulating the exhaust one way or another, if it was an ok idea then I'd go new cats, enamel on the whole exhaust and a reflective component on the glass, as it goes under the drive tunnel and near the footwells.

Considered it myself, but didn't get the thorough advice, so don't take my word as gospel !

Mine is the same, defo nothing wrong with the heater, it just gets hot in there particularly when going around town, does depend on the outside temp as well though.

I had a similar problem on my Chimaera, but in the driver's side - it actually melted the rubber toe on my baseball boots! lol

In my case there were two problems - the heater feed pipe wasn't properly routed/vent not sealed and there were a couple of gaps around the pedals that needed sealing (this is a technical term which means 'needed the carpet shoving in to the gap' ).

Try those before spending any money. Fact is that it's all a bit Heath Robinson, so going round and shoving connectors together/squirting Bostik will cure a multitude of problems.

Have fun
