Looking to replace my mums aging Toyota Corolla for sometime more modern and we are looking at a Hybrid, she does mostly town driving and I don't think she's ready to go full EV.

Budget will be around £10k - £14k, I'm not in tune with what's out there so reaching out to the PH collective.

Yaris hybrid

My mum has had hers for 4 years now and she only drives it locally. Cheap to insure and maintain and if you get one that was registered before April 17, road tax will be free as well. She averages around 40 mpg in the winter months and 50 mpg in the summer months, trip indicated, probably a little less in reality.

Can't fault it really. The only advise I would give is to get one that has the 15 inch wheel option instead of the 16's. Cheaper tyres, has a better turning radius and is more comfortable.

If a manual is desired then take a look at the Suzuki Ignis. Very fuel efficient and the higher driving position often suits older folk.

I'll be honest & say it doesn't sound like she'll be making use of the hybrid at which point something like a Kia Rio First Edition with 4 Years warranty left on it makes a lot of sense:

You would get a new or nearly new Fiat 500 Hybrid for your budget.

How about a plug in hybrid? They make a great stepping stone to full EV, as you can still get the government grant to install a home charger, but are not relying on having to charge it. You can get insane mpg (200+) if you charge regularly, which I do with mine. It's also proving very handy with the current fuel panic buying crisis. Here are some nice ones

Might be worth getting to Fish Motors in Bolton as they have both an Audi A3 e-tron and a VW Golf GTE in stock at the moment - they are both essentially the same car underneath

Vauxhall Amperas are good value PHEVs, a bit old and potentially a bit on the big side maybe?

Finally - I'd avoid Toyota Prius, Auris, Honda Jazz, Insight as they are more prone to catalytic converter theft, something I'm sure you don't want your Mum to experience!

The newer Honda Jazz (2017+ I believe) are ok for catalytic converter theft, it's just the earlier ones that have issues.

Definitely avoid an Auris hybrid - I sold mine due to cat issues.

CT200h is actually just an Auris hybrid underneath, so that's to be avoided as well.

Yaris hybrid is fine up to 50mph, quite nippy from a standstill around town. But very slow above 50mph on the motorway. In the winter they can crab around car parks in freezing temperatures on summer tyres with full lock, so winter tyres are recommended (or using wider car parks!)
