Please can anyone with any clue whatsoever (as I have none) about laptops, tell me what the differences/benefits/setbacks of the following two machines are? IE, which would do what best? Would I notice a difference etc?

Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.69 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Pen and touch support with 10 touch points

Laptop 2
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3720QM CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.60 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

I think it firmly depends on what you're intending to do with it - the first laptop will be fine, the second much higher performance (I am assuming there is a decent price difference?). If you're just doing stuff with office products and watching youtube, the first will be fine.

The first one has a processor about 7 years newer than the second one, but the second one has twice as much working memory.

The first one will feel livelier, until/unless you've got enough going on that it is short of memory upon which point the second one will cope better.

I'd expect you to notice say the first one rendering web pages faster, and running cooler for playing things like youtube videos.

Both CPUs turbo to about 3.6 GHz (you can pretty much ignore the quoted bas clock speeds) and the first CPU is 7 generations newer. The first laptop is the faster one.

Any other wrinkles that might affect the decision, such as differences in storage (i.e. NVMe vs SSD)?

Laptop 2 will likely have DDR3 as opposed to DDR4 RAM. Nothing wrong with an older laptop (I'm still using an alienware 17x R4 with a 3630QM i7 processor) but I would probably want a new battery installed. Also Windows 11 will not run on a third gen i7.
