Which cars have avoided most of the covid tax price increase
Discussion
I'm bored of the shed 320d I that I picked up a few months ago off a friend as I didn't want to purchase anything of real value based on the current used prices we are seeing.
I've noticed that my son's car (208 GTI) hasn't seemed to of gone up all that much in the last 6-9 months which got me thinking..
Are there any cars of interest that you have noticed to of been partially or mostly excluded from this user car price madness?
I was looking at weekend at an F80 M3 and that seemed reasonable, I called up and then called back 2hrs later and the car had gone. Gutted.
I want to either spend 10-15k on something to keep a year or up to
35k to keep 2-3 years that won't depreciate like the overpriced cars currently may well do.
Auto
Sub 6 to 60, good remap potential
2013 or newer
Less than 45k miles
With or potential for manufacturers warranty if above 25k
Any ideas?
What have you had your eye on?

I’ve noticed it’s the newer stuff (less than 3 years old) that seem to have the most inflated prices.
I have a 66 plate mk7 Fiesta ST3 which is currently worth about £9k. That’s the same price I paid for it just over a year ago. But looking at the mk8 ST3 on a 68 plate, they start at £17.5k which seems ridiculous to me. Same story with a lot of popular hot hatches. I30N, fk8 CTR etc. costing as much as they did new even at 3 years old.
I would stay away from the obvious. Your sons 208 gti is a good example of a great car that was a bit under the radar. The 308 gti is similar and offers better value than others. Astra gtc vxr too.
For your 1 year option, maybe something like an Alfa Giulietta QV. Available for sensible money and fits the criteria you set out.

Funny you should mention both the mk7 ST and 308 gti.
I've been doing a daily valuation of a 15 plate ST2 with 18k since December (part of my job. The trade in price is up 49%. It started at £7400, it's now £10900.
I've also been looking at the 308 gti, and it does seem a bargain.

It's not scientific but the things I've noticed that don't seem to have blown up quite so much appear to be the slightly esoteric or unfashionable choices. Anything French (except RS Renaults), MPVs, defunct-in-the-UK brands like Chevrolet, Dodge and Infiniti, medium-sized estates, high-spec large saloons that aren't BMWs, Audis or Mercs, and weird one-off models that never quite caught on here like Peugeot 1007s and Renault Winds.
The major price inflation seems to be in three places; nearly new, mum-friendly SUVs, and the sub-£1,000 shedbanger market. Although I think to a point, everyone selling a car is fluffing the window sticker a bit, either chancing it or because the market is allowing it.

Agreed I'm looking for a cheap comfy estate right now, Jaguar X type seems good value, unpopular, diesel but much cheaper than a Merc/Audi equivalent.
At the new car end of the market,I think it's just a case of the massive discounts that we were all used to have disappeared owing to lack of supply, this has knocked onto the 2nd hand market. If you are looking to drop 20 or 30k on a car right now my advice to be to wait for 18 months if you can.

Must be a mileage thing.
Mine is a 2017 66 plate st3. Now it does have 72k miles on it but the part ex value on AT is £7990.
As im sure you know, trade and retail prices are 2 very different things, if you paid £9k for it a year ago and getting £8k trade in now, it would probably be retailed for around £10500, maybe £11000Mine is a 2017 66 plate st3. Now it does have 72k miles on it but the part ex value on AT is £7990.
