Small Automatic with 5 doors for £10k
Discussion
My Dad is looking to replace his Polo with something the same size. He is after an Automatic too. I did have a look at a Full Electric car, but he is not keen on the Zoe or Leaf.
He does around 17k a year so I’m not sure whether a Diesel would be okay? As I know they are looking to phase out Diesel. He is into Gadgets so I would like it to come with some equipment. It also needs to be 5 doors with low mileage upto 25k
Any help or advice would be great.

What's the budget? Lots of EVs around, Kia Soul electric, VW ID3, BMW i3. If the range fits his usage and he wants something boring/easy to drive anyway, lots to be said for them.
Otherwise yes a Toyota hybrid (could also go up to a Auris or Prius) is a well-proven option.
17k a year could be diesel territory, it depends if it's lots of short journeys <5 miles or fewer longer ones. Lots of short trips would be well suited to EV, fewer longer ones would work better for diesel.
Diesels prior to Euro 6 standard (mandatory since 2016) are being taxed on various cities and roads so a bit of an uncertain outlook. Any Euro 6 onwards diesel is fine, there are millions on the road, they won't be banned or anything any time soon. Diesel fuel will be available for trucks at the very least for decades, so no worries there.

Diesel will be perfect (they're not phasing it out by the way) as long as he has a Euro6 hell be fine.He does around 17k a year so I’m not sure whether a Diesel would be okay? With your dads budget you'll have to up your mileage criteria, things like comfort low NVH reliability & nice spec are where I'd be looking.
ULEZ/CAZ compliant diesel options are these:
Insignia Elite Nav 160

I've been looking in this price range for an automatic for my wife.
She prefers SUV type vehicles, particularly Jukes. Would also prefer low mileage if possible.
Really hard work though, in the current market with seemingly rising prices and diminishing stock.
My observations/ideas -
- low mileage Yaris, Aygo, Leaf, Picanto all fairly common in this price range.
- tricky to come by anything like a Polo/Golf with that price and miles.
- Renault Captur (1.5 diesel usually) might be worth a look, some tidy 2014-16 plate around the £10/11k mark though 25k miles might be tricky.
-Other random ideas that might just about fit the criteria - Peugeot 2008, Kia Cee'd, Clio.

I'd still go for a diesel if he is doing 17,000 miles a year - that's quite a lot!
The only two that satisfy all your requirements are these
Renault Megane 1.5 dCi

I would agree with the suggestion of a Yaris hybrid. Totally boring car, but also perfect for what he wants. Effortless to drive and very economical.
I wouldn't want to do 17k a year in a Yaris or anything else that size.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
