Buying a Van in NI and bringing to UK?

I am hoping to buy a van (converted as a motorcaravan but not registered as one) which is currently based in Northern Ireland. I want to bring it back to the UK (which is where I live) after I've bought it in NI but can't make heads or tails out of the rules and regs to get it to the UK.
It has a UK number plate and was originally in the UK before it was taken over to NI for the conversion.
It would only be for personal use but I've been told I need to go throught the paperwork and process of importing it.
Does anyone have any experience with this or any idea where I can look to find some clarification/answers?

UK=GB+NI.
I doubt very much if you have anything to do other than register in it your name. DVLA Swansea handle all this now, before we had DVLNI in Coleraine, so they were two different entities. I suspect that the information you received might have pertained to the import of a RoI vehicle.

Buy Van in NI, Book Ferry to Cairnryan/Liverpool

Take ferry journey

Drive to your home

Register van at your address as you would with any other vehicle.

I bought a car in NI and brought it home to England, process was as Francy555 says, just send off the new keeper slip from the V5 as usual. No different from buying a used vehicle from anywhere else in the UK.

You may not be able to tax the car online if currently in NI, I seem to have got away with driving home and going to the Post Office the following morning ;-)


The question of informing the DVLA that it's been converted to a campervan is a separate issue, I imagine there's a process to go through if needed, but shouldn't be different due to being in NI.
