DBS/DB9 License Plate Plinth

Hi guys currently owning a DBS V12 09 Model. The want to attach the front license plate plinth but unsure how to do it.

I currently have below parts

AD33-17A835-AA : JAPAN FR PLINTH
4G43-17C833-AA : BOX TOWEYE CVR FED ( THE DEALER SAID THIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS FIXING KIT) ....basically consists of 2 bolts, 2 washers, 2 other end of the bolts picture in gold

Can anyone advise how to do it. As in which hole in the plinth is the nuts and bolts suppose to go through?

I am hoping i do not need to remove the front bumper to put it on. Thanks very much for any comments and inputs!

By looking at the build diagram

I basically have

PART 1 X1

PART 3 X2

PART 4 X2

PART 5 X2

I have also asked dealer that if Part No 2 is required but the answer was

"Part No. 2 in the diagram was not supplied as this is for transport purposes only when the vehicle is brand new"

When I replaced for a slimmer version I cut the bolts but to fit a new one you’ll have to remove the bumper

Most of us spend our day working out how to remove it and throw it away. Never seen anyone fitting one.

Out of interest why are you heading in the opposite direction?

(I'm not avoiding trying to help, I simply don't know the answer to your question as I've always had the dealer remove the plinths before delivery on my Astons)

Have you offered up the plinth centrally to the bumper to align the plinth holes with those already in the bumper? The plugs from the original factory installation may already still be in place (I cant see why anyone would remove them as they dont cause an issue), in which case you simply screw it on? If everything has been removed from the car from the original factory installation then I think kevinbird is correct and the bumper needs removing to fit new plugs.

Hi Sean,

I’m not an expert so I may tell you something you already know. I’m assuming that you are in the US and your car had no front plinth, as many states do not require front number plates, so where they can AML try not to put unsightly holes or plugs on a non-plinth bumper.

The two fixings (No. 5 on the diagram) are called “nutserts”. They act like a pop rivet and are designed to collapse and clamp on to the bumper skin and then allow the two 5mm screws and washers to attach the plinth. To fit the nutserts, if there aren’t holes in your bumper skin then you”ll need to find the correct hole size and carefully drill two holes in the bumper skin. You then push the nutsert into the hole you just drilled until the flange is hard onto the outside surface, then you crimp the nutsert to the bumper skin. There is a special tool to fit a nutsert, which works by screwing into the thread and then pulling the threaded part back into the tool, which makes the nutsert tube collapse like a pop rivet, it spreads out behind the bumper skin and clamps onto the skin. You then unscrew the tool, leaving the threaded insert behind furmly riveted to the bumper skin and ready to accept the screw fitting. You can just use a 5mm bolt, a washer, a nut, some tube, a ring spanner and a ratchet to wind into the nutsert and collapse it. It can be tricky to keep the nutsert still as you tighten the bolt and collapse the tube of the nutsert and it’s easy to make the hole oversize if it rocks or rotates as the bumper is just PU. You’ll see what I mean, and he’s fitting to a steel or al box section, not a flimsy bumper skin.

The plinth itself should be profiled to match the bumper, so it should be obvious which of the holes you use. If the recovery eye fits through the plinth then you should be able to align the plinth by using the eye. You should not have to remove the bumper as all the drilling and fitting can be done from the outside.

If I were you I’d also try to find a small rubber section or some tape to protect the edge of the plinth that will clamp against the bumper skin (if it does) and stop it digging into and marking the bumper paint - the plinths can “fret” as the car hits bumps in the road

The nutserts (or rivnuts as they are sometimes called) that you have are designed to work in plastic - if you notice there are slots or slits in the body of the nutsert that will allow it to split, bend and part like petals so the folded “petals” then clamp the plastic - pop rivets for soft materials like plastic work in the same way. These sorts of nutserts require less force to install.
