I have a tiny limited company, employing only my wife. We've got three customers. It's a tiny sub-income pin money business.

I received a demand from the ico.org.uk today telling me I needed to pay annual fee of £40-60 for processing personal information.

Is this really a thing? I only send invoices to three companies and two are non UK.

Does anyone else have experience of this?

Given what you've said, go through the workflow and you'll almost certainly find you don't have to do, or pay, anything.

Hi

Are you B2B or B2C?

If you are not holding any personal information within the business, you do not need to pay it

We've also had this - and we need to pay, because we have CCTV on the premises (and yet we are only a block of flats with CCTV for security).

It all seems a bit overkill to me.

I like the way you have to pay a fee to somebody else for something you do yourself

It's like being charged by the Turd Commissioner for doing a turd.

Cheeky rev raiser for ICO.... 4,000,000 + companies in UK get the letter x £40-60 !

In my experience the ICO do naff all on legit complaints anyway, a pointless organisation.

Let me guess - if you don't pay, do they suddenly put their tea and biscuits down and get very active prosecuting the culprit?

I’d like to know a bit more about this as I’ve been asked to pay it for my 2 companies. One I filled the online form in saying I didn’t need to and haven’t heard anything since (this was 6 months ago). Had a letter this week for second company which I will have to pay.

What exactly am I paying for? What do the ICO do?

Christ knows. I wonder if they have a website or something?

I meant what do the ICO do for me for paying the £40.

The data protection fee makes up something like 90% of the funding they get. What they do with that funding is on their website.

Whether it’s worth it is an entirely different discussion smile
