M4 (F82?) or M440i
Discussion
Hi All,
I currently drive a X3 M40d and was going to replace it with a 2021 M440i, however while looking I have noticed a few of the last model M4 competition with low miles and I'm now quite torn between a new model with digital dash etc or a classic M4.
Any thoughts to sway me either way?
Thanks

Personally I'd go for the G22 M440i. Same performance as an E82 M4 (near as makes no difference), while much less costly to run and with a longer shelf life. That said, if I rocked up at the showroom to place my G22 M440i order and there was an F82 M4 Competition in Miami Blue sitting there I suspect my sensible plan might unravel rather quickly!
I have really, really tried to like the G series as was tempted with a 440i. I just can't though on looks alone. Yes, it can shift, has decent tech and xdrive, but styling and the size now is just ridiculous. It's basically a Mustang. Will be sticking with my F82 for now. I'd test drive both though and make your decision then.

They're a very different proposition, though.Other than the 0-62, due to 4wd traction, I'd be amazed if the M440i is near to the F82 M4. It's 80bhp down on the F82 CP and 200kg heavier.
It will also drive nothing like an 'M' car but I do get that these days for a lot of people straight line speed is what matters most.

I was wondering where the fuel cap cover had gone on that F82 M4 to be fair!

Massively different cars, so I really think you have to drive both.
I recently test drove an M340i, an M340d, and an F82 M4 CP. The M340's are very good cars (I preferred the M340d, as I didn't enjoy the engine noise of the M340i very much) but are pretty much point and go... Fast, effortless, quiet, corner well, but ultimately they both felt a bit bland and safe. (I got back in my then C43 AMG after the test drive, and preferred that.)
The M4 was a completely different proposition - even driving down the road at 30mph, it feels like an event. You're much more connected to the car, you feel every nuance of the road beneath you, and you can feel the under your right foot crying out to be revved. However, it's a car that demands a lot more commitment of you than the M340's - even in the dry it's quite a handful, and getting the power down in the wet is challenging, to say the least!
I ended up buying the M4, and really enjoyed driving it, however it's being sold next week - partly for financial reasons, but also if I'm honest, because the experience of owning it was a bit much for me. Taking it out for a blast in the dry was exhilarating, but as a daily driver it was just too full on for me.
Anyway, let us know which one you decide to go for.

Agreed. Completely different cars, and the F82 M4 is much faster than the M440i once traction is out of the equation. Carwow has actually drag raced them along with the G82 M4 in a 3 way test. I'd go F82 M4. Not ignoring the obvious in that it's a full fat M car with all the savagery that goes with it, I think it's in another league aesthetically. Some people may shoot me down but the F32/F82 shape is one of the nicest coupe designs BMW has ever done. And in M4 format it's beautifully aggressive.
If you get the F82 M4 and it's too much, just sell it and get the M440i. The issue with going M440i first will be that nagging feeling that you compromised. Every time I've compromised I've eventually regretted it, even if only in small ways, and it's cost me more money to undo that compromise later down the road.
