OK it was issued to ex-Goldfinger Aston BMT216A, but 6 years after the film was released and after it had been re-registered onto another number by the subsequent owner.

Confirmation that the world has gone mad. These auctioneers must be laughing all the way to the bank (oh no, it's been closed biggrin) - what's the new expression that can be used instead?

When you have just paid $6.4 million for the car, another £25K to stick a tax disc in the screen is nothing.

That linked story is not the same car though. The real deal DP/216/1 was stolen in Florida back in 1997. There was a recent rumour about it being spotted in the Middle East. Maybe that guy bought it, but it still takes two people to bid something up so high. Clearly if it does exist, it would be the subject of much ownership claims.

I've included that story in my latest article on Jaguars at auction. Ludicrous, but no more so than a VW Samba selling for over $220,000. And in a horrible shade of brown to boot. There is no telling what will happen at auction if two persons get fixated on something.
