One of our businesses tends to deal with bank transfers but we want to take occasional card payments.

We are just opening a Nat West account (if they get their st together) that offers a service called Tyl. Does anyone use this and is this the sort of thing we need? Or is there a better way of going about things?

Depends upon the business context. Cardholder present or not present? For the former, I've used Zettle a lot in the past - 1.75% fee, no monthlies, small up-front charge for the reader, no hassles. Square are similar, but offer virtual terminal too (cardholder not present) for 2.5%.

Tyl looks like it carries monthly fees as well as transaction charges.

Work out how many transactions your are likely to process over a year.

Compare options - some card providers charge a monthly fee + % of trasaction and others use the model to just charge on each transaction. Also do not forget to factor in the upfront purchase of the card reading machine.

Generally if your are low volumne business or are maybe seasonal then the providers that only charge per transaction (ie. iZettle) may well work out cheaper, plus it is nice to know that you won't be paying anything during quiet periods of business.

We use Square

It has a monthly fee and I forget the % per transaction but seems to work well for us.

Problem we have is we occasionally have to take payments running in the the thousands for pro forma customers so although we don't use it a lot, when we do the lower % of a split pricing model suits us better.

On the rare occasion I've had to take a payment on it when the team have been on holiday etc it's been pretty straight forward to use with no prior training etc. Possibly other options out there but it's fallen in to the 'if it aint broke...' category for me so far.

Cheers,

Dave

My other half recently started a Dog Grooming business and went with SumUp.

It's been flawless and payments go into her bank within a day or so - except someone paid by American Express the other day and it took over a week! It has a useful app showing whats going into the account so you can track payments etc.

She has no technical skills whatsoever and managed to set it up and use it, so it must be easy.
