Chimaera 400 (1998) brakes

Hi I'm trying to find a drivers side front caliper for a 98 Chimaera (which has 260mm discs) complete with the bit which holds the pads in place.
It is confusing because I've seen this called a number of different things including: caliper carrier, brake pad cage & caliper bracket.
The normal TVR parts sites haven't been able to help.
I have tried to do some digging and found it may be the same part as used on Sierra XR4i, Sierra XR4x4, Escort RS Turbo Series 2 but I'm not sure as that is just from old threads.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

It's not uncommon for a car part to be known by more than one name. Personally I would refer to them as caliper carriers.

These could be them but there again they could be for the smaller 240mm disc set up used on the early Griffs and Chims? A phone call to the seller should clarify.

I bought the car in April then my local garage pointed out the disc and caliper on the drivers side were much bigger than the passenger side.

I'm keen on returning it back to standard but didn't realise how hard it can be to track down parts.

I'd be inclined to throw the lot away and start again with a matched pair!

Second hand calipers with carriers do come up for sale occasionally when owners upgrade to fancy Brembo or similar calipers.

Are you on any FaceBook TVR groups, so much more going on there these days than here on PH.

I think they should match up with the carriers posted earlier if you zoom in on the casting numbers.


Here's a pair with the carriers pictured in the background but for that price I'd start thinking of aftermarket

Have a look at the bigger caliper and see if it has 888/887 stamped in it anywhere, that would make it a cosworth one.

Thanks I need the drivers side but the first one doesn't have the caliper carrier. I've enquired about the pair but they aren't willing to split them and yes the price is high.
I have thought about aftermarket as I'm going to get new pads and discs while I'm at it - so it may end up being that or waiting for the parts to turn up as salvage.

Could try giving Burton's a call, they're doing calipers on an exchange basis but you can pay £20 instead. They may have carriers or be able to point you in a direction, they're always helpful down there.

They may not be a bargain but given that second hand fetch £100+ these days those ain't bad for fully reconditioned.

It's up to you but I really wouldn't waste my time buying an odd caliper and then trying to locate the appropriate carrier. A matched pair in A1 condition has got to be the way to go, imho

Was that purchased privately or from a trader?

Different sized discs is a major safety issue. If you purchased from a trader, take it straight back and ask them to sort it.

If a private purchase, then, err, carry on as you were.

If it were me, I would replace both sides as so you know they are a matched pair. They are Ford parts, so should not cost the world.

I have a complete 260mm setup with freshly plated carriers I'd let go for the right money.
