A little shocked...

Car price is irrelevant to most buyers nowadays, which is why manufacturers can put whatever stupid price they like on them.
Most just want to pay their £500-5000 a month forever, sucked into the endless regime called PCP.
A lot of people these days have car allowances, so monthly costs are all that really matter. The list price only matters for generating the VED due. Most just want to pay their £500-5000 a month forever, sucked into the endless regime called PCP.
Were you also shocked that your 330i coupe was probably close to £40k new before options 14 years ago?
The new 420D starts at £40k vs the £33k that the e92 320D started at...so a £7k/20% increase in the base price...is that such a huge increase for 14 years? If it had simply followed inflation, it should be £48k.

I am a little shocked you took your 2007 BMW to a main dealer for an mot
To shock you further, I get it serviced there too!
I live on the Isle of Wight and although I do have a local specialist, their prices for servicing are not much cheaper than the main dealer. Taking to the mainland is just a PITA for a service, in terms of ferry travel/ cost and a day off work too.

It was a working vehicle and was serviced about 5 times a year, they would always take it in at very short notice if I had an issue, thankfully not very often and I got a 15% discount because of the number of services.
The Indy was cheaper and very good but was always booked up about 3 weeks in advance so couldn't take the risk of being off road for that long.
I know it is popular on here to knock main dealers, but some are quite good, surprisingly.

No my 330i had a list price of £34550 when new. E92 320D started at £29k ISH.The new 420D starts at £40k vs the £33k that the e92 320D started at...so a £7k/20% increase in the base price...is that such a huge increase for 14 years? If it had simply followed inflation, it should be £48k.
However, I think I am just out of touch though... and need to start paying monthly.....

Yep IIRC the list on our Z4C was 41k in 2007, still a lovely looking car after 14 years.
That looks great. Ruby Black I think, the same as my first one. Followed that with Montego Blue but replaced that in 2019 with a Silver Grey M Coupe as I seem to be addicted!
List for that in 2006 was £41,285 but mine would have been just over £44K with options. Given that they weren't that much dearer than the 3.0Si it's surprising how few BMW sold.

Yeah when I bought the Z4C they had a ruby black Z4M as well in the showroom, but she preferred the individual leather and auto box so Z4C is was, both were within 3-4k of each other, I'd have preferred the M we traded in a e46 M3 SMG against it.
Ouch, I feel your pain! As good as the N52 engine is the S54 is just so special, but was never offered with anything other than a manual gearbox. Thankfully for me!
Although if you have had yours from new that is one special example.
