hi, my mum has recently got an 02 plate alfa 147 1.6 t-spark lusso and i love it, even more so that im insured on it!
Earlier i went out for a spin in it and revved more than usual and heard a "woosh"/"dufhh" sound as i changed from 2nd to 3rd, whats this?
Also the car sounds strange when turning the engine on from cold, almost a diesel type sound which seems weird

The diesel-esque noise is *probably* the variator - a device on the inlet cam that alters the valve timing. It shouldn't usually be noisy like that; a few seconds on start-up is OK, but anymore should warrant attention (i.e. replacement). It's a cambelt-off job and the variator itse;f is approximately £80, so budget on IRO £500ish from an indie. Variators can fail as a result of low oil level; get out there and check.

As for t' other noise. Not a clue. Probably a case of TADTS.

I had advice that it was the variator as well (between 0.5 and 1.5 seconds (terrible) sound on start up) Defo check the oil but was told by offical alfa that it could be oil pressure getting back up. Advised on here to get a second opinion which is in the pipeline.
Check that oil (mine went in to Alfa low recently (shamed)
