Is it possible to get any more info from a pic on FB such as where it was taken on a smartphone?
I ask this as i put up a 'Where is gthis' pic of a road that has been bypassed twice and got the answer back in less than 5min. The guy said he saw the GPS co-ordinates.
Either he was very local or pulling my leg

It's usually stored in the photo metadata/EXIF.

Here's an example from a photo I've recently taken on my phone...

It's an interesting question.

So privately FB uses metadata to determine location, camera type and a few other things however publicly it will (try to) strip all metadata with the exception of a few fields (Creator, Creator Job Title, Copyright Notice, Credit Line, Source, Description Writer).

However there is no saying this process will work correctly in every case especially if there is something unusual about the metadata.

There is a simple way to test the pic your friend mentioned. Download it from Facebook (so you know you got exactly the same pic as your friend) and then run it through one of the free meta-data tools or alternatively perform your own analysis. This should prove if the claim is correct or not.
