£3000 max Estate/MPV
Discussion
Hi all,
My turn to ask the collective on car choice.
My girlfriend's sheddy 2008 Focus 1.6 diesel is on it's last legs.
£3000 Max budget
Fit 2 dogs (Springer and a Lurcher)
15,000 miles a year
Reliability is a top priority
No Fords (she now hates them with a passion)
She likes VW having owned a few and loves driving her Mum's VW Touran with the 1.9PD engine.
There's a few about in budget at about 120,000 miles, but the 2.0 litre tdi is more common. Will they be worse than the PD?
She's also open to the Seat Altea or Golf/Octavia estates.
I've suggested the 2 litre diesel Volvo V50 (not the 1.6 DRIVe as I think it's the same engine as her Focus) or the 1.6 HDi C3 Picasso or 207 SW. Any horror stories with them? All will be high mileage obviously.
Anything else you guys can think of?

Standard answer from me is the Volvo V70 with the D5 engine pre 2005 Euro emissions update in manual guise.
Some people will say the 2.0CR isn't reliable but I've taken one to over 250k and it seemed OK and there's literally millions of them on the road so I guess they're going to seem less reliable when a few people shout about failures.

I believe the C3 Picasso will be the same 1.6D PSA engine as the Focus.
The 2.0D in the V50 is the larger version of this engine and is much more reliable. If you are considering a V50 you might as well re-consider Ford's with it fitted as well, such as the newest, highest spec version of the original CMax you can find. We had one for 15yrs, a 2.0TDCI with the 6 speed manual gearbox and it was great.
If reliability is key then perhaps a Honda Accord 2.0i or Toyota Avensis 1.8i estate? e.g. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108186...
Honda also did a 1.8 petrol FR-V if you can find one.
There is always going to be risk with a £3k 2nd hand car. There is an element of pot luck involved - buying an NA petrol rather than an ageing turbo diesel should help reduce the risk of a large, unexpected bill.

Ok, I'll see what she thinks on the 2.0 Ford then. The 2.0D in the V50 is the larger version of this engine and is much more reliable. Our original budget was up to £1500 but given the market right now we've had to up it. Main reason we're considering diesel is because of the motorway miles and the PDs good reputation. Her mum's mainly does short trip but is up to 150,000 miles with no issues at all.
On petrols though there is this deceased spec civic that I oddly like (partly out of my dad owning an EP3 Type R) https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105112...
I also like the FRV but that's too ugly apparently. The Accord might be worth a look though.
We've run a 2.0D S40 for 5 years and 80k miles (90k to 170k). The engine itself has been ultra reliable, no issues what so ever. It's the bits tacked on which cause the problems
We've had to replace the EGR (~95k) and the DPF (~115k), although I don't think that's unusual for a modern diesel.
We're not planning on getting rid anytime soon and I don't see any reason why it won't see north of 200k in our ownership.
