Ever since they removed the tax disc the tax doesn’t transfer when you buy/sell (as you painfully found out). I’m surprised dealers don’t just include tax in the price and bump it up. I’m sure that wouldn’t do it.

Good to see you’re enjoying it over the 330d. I think the LCI F30 is much better than the early ones, namely in how they drive. I’m sure the ULEZ extension has done the same for many people, too.

Thanks JakeT...another thing the £50 of diesel promised wasn't in there either had to ask for it. I never had the V5 ,logbook or a green slip I now know about so how did they expect me to Tax it.

It just reminded me why I drive 55 miles to N Oxford BMW when this Dealer is just 3 miles away.

Yes ULEZ ,a monthly ball and chain again is the last thing I need after a rotten covid financially. As I said to the salesman I should be excited about getting a new car not gutted.

I do a shedload of miles I could not risk buying a cheap can.

Re London Ulez extension in oct 25th had to very reluctantly sell my 2014 from new F30 30d Luxury bought without seeing and from the off the SE suspension was so bad a floating sailing boat blangmange in many ways laughable.Put ACS shocks and springs on after a month to get it to some normality...

In July was about to sign for a 128ti new but had a gut feeling 3 month build would be 6 so walked away from a great deal £31500 with sunroof my option I have to have.

To cut to the chase I have bought an 18 plate 335d xdrive with sunroof from a main dealer.

On the test drive I said to my partner I will know in the first 50 yards when I brake if the LCI sorted out the suspension. It had ,no dipping and holding on to the seat with my arse squeeze.

I read that they changed the ARB's Top Mounts Springs and Dampers. No adaptive on this.

I never "loved" my 30d I do love this car rides like a limo it is on 19s as well which was a ride concern but it's very good guess some may feel it's still a bit too soft but I like it. Infact on those sweeping roads coming off and round a motorway I actually think it handles better than my 3od with ACS shocks and springs, odd that is the xdrivefeels more planted.

and the engine feels totally different just linear power no turbo then woomph like the 30d. I went up and down the M4 in middle lane comfort mode and the OBC showed 58mpg..overall I think it uses 10% more fuel. Love the sports seats had standard before.Steering is different as well far nicer feel.

So drove for a day woke up next morning with partner shouting about the car thought someone had hit it but it had been clamped with stickers all over No Tax !

Once unclamped and £100 fine I went down there because on the phone the sales manager and me did not get on he basically said down to me as I said to him stop talking like a barrister and more like a Main Dealer with an angry customer

Before I went down there I rang the BMW Dealer N Oxford whom I usually use and asked about their used car procedure and car tax. They said at handover they open the govt website and sort the tax out with the customer paying. That did not happen

The salesman tried wriggling by saying he asked if I had tax and insurance. He did not he asked if I had insurance as he shoved another form under my nose to sign "sign this to say you have insurance" not tax he messed up and to me was all over the place during the handover.

So after I walked in and had a discusdion with the sales manager I was calm not ranting and in the end he was actually very apologetic I was offered the £100 fine paid or £200 off a sevice which I took.

In my life I try not to assume anything but Tax never crossed my mind every bmw I have had has been taxed

Interstingly reading the blurb left on my windscreen you cannot take on someone elses Tax on a car after purchase any more you have to retax yourself.

Lesson learnt

Great car mind

The current system with road tax has been in operation since 2014.

The dealer experience sounds pretty poor - in every case since then the dealer does the tax at handover before you take the car away. It has to be done separately from the car sale on the DVLA website.

However, it's ultimately your responsibility to ensure the car is taxed, as you've seen ignorance isn't an excuse.

Having said that, you were pretty unlucky. Suspiciously so I would say.

Ever since the system changed, I've found it a breeze to tax a car upon buying. The only time I had trouble, as a heads up to anyone who finds themselves in this situation, is if the car is on the "disabled" tax class you have to tax it at the post office. You can't do it online for some reason, as it needs a change of tax class.

I might have been a little naughty and asked the owner very nicely not to press the button online saying the car had been sold and to give me an hour to get home before doing so.... Next morning I went straight to the post office to tax it.
