So I’ve had my Q5 for a little while now. It’s a Q5 Sportback 45 TFSI quattro. My thoughts are as follows:

- It is VERY thirsty. Spending £80 a week in petrol.
- It is a boring car to drive. The Q3 felt more dynamic.
- The steering is almost completely devoid of feeling; there is no sense of connection to the car and what it is doing.
- It is too big for cramped car parks in the UK. Getting in and out of bays is difficult, even with the sensors and camera.
- The power behind the accelerator and the strength of the brakes makes low speed manoeuvres (such as 3 point turn) difficult, and kangarooie.
- The power, grip and torque is very impressive. Putting your foot down to go from sat 20 to 70 is pretty cool.
- The car is in its element cruising long distances. It makes light work of long motorway journeys and is like travelling on an aeroplane first class.
- It looks very big from the outside, but pretty ordinary on the inside. Spacious, but not massive, and certainly not cramped.
- The stuck on iPad simply doesn’t look as good as a built in MMI of the newer design e.g. Q3, Q8 etc.
- The Sport trim is a bit cheap aesthetically speaking but robust and hard wearing which is ideal for a family car.
- The standard suspension is great for bumps, pot holes, which you don’t particularly notice.
- It misses some safety features like lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring which are standard on an entry level Q3.
- The seats are a bit hard and uncomfortable, although that feeling lessens as you wear it in.
- The floor is too high up making it feel like your knees are lifted right up to where the steering wheel sits.
- The engine is very quiet and rarely sounds strained.
- The arm rest does not have a latch as a cost saving measure.
- There are few ways to play music. Only through phone.
- The speed limiter is very effective. It has a 1mph margin of error if you catch it by surprise by going down a hill. Lessor marques’ speed limiters effectively stop working completely when going down hills.
- The wheels are huge.
- You can’t fit a roof box on the Sportback model despite it having roof bars.
- The car doesn’t look very ‘modern’ on the inside, but is a nice place to be.
- The boot is massive, even on the Sportback model.
- Once your eyes are used to the Sportback model, seeing the normal SUV shape is quite jarring as it looks very boxy and boring looking.
- Despite the sloping roof, the Sportback doesn’t feel remotely like a ‘coupé’.
- The 12 inch high def Virtual Cockpit is the best in the business, it looks the bees knees and is functionally fantastic.

Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts.

I bought a Q5 2.0 40tdi Sport Quattro brand new in May, and sold it in September - thats what I thought of it hehe

- Seats become really uncomfortable after about 30 mins driving, that was reason enough to get rid, totally unacceptable.
- Whoever designed the DSG gearbox/software needs shot, having the change-up point to top gear around 70mph means the gearbox constantly hunts up and down when at motorway speed limits, so you drive at 60mph or 80mph+ to avoid it.
- Interior had a few creaks and vibrations from new and didnt have the bank vault like build I was lead to believe Audis had.
- Constant issues with software updates and connectivity.
- Brakes are sharp and not very progressive; they are pretty much on or off!

Good points

- The ride and handling was decent for a car of its size and body style.
- Enough poke for an everyday car, with good mpg.
- Virtual cockpit is excellent.

Pretty dull and forgettable though, my first Audi and I didnt get the fuss.

I just find them so boring.

Even the SQ5 has lost its tailpipes….

Yawn.

I’d rather have a well specced XC60.

Must be getting old….

Nah it’s the family car now. Wife likes it. I do too for its positives. But I wouldn’t get it again.

On the plus side, they do tend to be a reliable car.

Ultimately, the dealership experience was best and we got a good deal. I find that to be definitive in which new car you end up getting.

I bought a Q5 40 TDi new in June, it’s a bit disappointing, my previous A6 was much better, design wise. The arm rest is crap and it’s had to have a software update already to get the sat nav working again after that packed up. The trouble with the A6 was rattles and electrical gremlins.

After reading the original post I’m glad I got a diesel, mines averaged 50 mpg over 5000 miles so far and managed 700 miles on the last tank.

If I had of had a proper test drive before buying I wouldn’t have bought it.

Do you mind if I ask what spec you've gone for? We're in the process of considering an XC60 to replace out 2014 Evoque.
Not sure whether to go mild hybrid or full hybrid and also R-Design or inscription plus petrol vs diesel - too many choices smile

I've ordered the diesel mild hybrid engine, as I'll do around 15k miles each year. Petrol made no sense and I couldn't find any useful real world running costs for the plug-in hybrid to confirm it was worth the huge extra cost from new.

Went Inscription spec over R Design, for those lovely seats and slightly softer suspension - in my forties, priorities changing...!

Can I pop a third in?

Not Q5 but an S4 B8.5 and after watching review upon review of motoring journalists getting a semi over Audi interiors it was a bit of an anti-climax and a let down when I discovered the binnacle plastics and media centre surround was thinner than the paint on the car, resulting in creak upon creak especially when cold.

A few foam tabs has sorted it, but I had to do this with every Honda I previously owned and really wanted to get away from having to do such. Everything works though and feels like it will continue to work for a long time and it does look pretty decent.
