Anyone able to recommend a quality tin opener that simply 'does the job'?

For such a basic one trick pony, they should all be the same but each one we've had ends up struggling to open tins cleanly. Would like to get a good one that opens tins with ease.

Not tried one OXO are always a good bet, I have a couple of really heavy duty chromed ones at home that came from Nisbets 10+ years ago still working perfectly.

Pretty sure I have gone through a few of the hand held bonzers over the years but this being PH you could always get a £400+ one, you'd be surprised how often they need part replacing!

Get one of these, they last ages. Alternatively get a 'Bonzer'!

I've had the Culinare MagiCan for a fair number of years and is pretty good, the only issue is on some cans it'll cut a very thin strip of paper from the label which could end up in your dinner. I just strip the paper off the can first as I'd be doing it for the recycling anyway so it's a bit of a non-issue for me.

I’ve a couple of those, never let us down & simple to use.

Agree with the little strip of paper, but not an issue as it’s easy enough to spot and pull out.

Haven't tried the Culinaire, but this similar OXO opener has always done the trick for us.

I notice on the Fray Bentos tins they recommend the Brabantia Essential Line Opener.

Have a look laugh at this.............

Gave it's first outing on the ultimate test. Had time to peel the spuds whilst waiting hehe Ignore my comment at the end it had actually worked but the lid was stuck on by the suction of the pastry!!

In all fairness it takes no time on a can of beans etc. The really good thing is the way it cuts leaves no sharp edge on tin or lid AND the lid fits snuggly back onto the can and can be popped into the fridge if you don't use all of the contents. thumbup

PS. yet to try it on a tin of corned beef yet which could be fun hehe

We have one of these, best thing I've ever bought for the kitchen.

Another vote for the Culinare MagiCan. Had one for years and it just works great.

For inexplicable reasons, my wife came home one day with a Culinare 'One Touch' automatic can opener. I have used it a few times, and it works absolutely fine, but it is practically faster to just get the MagiCan out and open tins by hand.

I generally file stuff like electric can openers in the same category as other 'new money' crap such as electric carving knives, remote control gas fires and electric salt and pepper grinders.

That's almost up there with opening a bottle of wine (cork closure) using a shoe wink.

For the past ten years I've been using the tin opener on a 30+ year old Swiss army knife to open the few tins without ring pulls. One day I'll own a tin opener again laugh.

I'd love to see a video of you opening a Fray Bentos with it laugh

A shoe? laugh.

If I was a Fray Bentos consumer I think it would spur me on to buy a proper replacement tin opener!

Thanks, I've ordered the Culinare MagiCan from Amazon for £6, worth a try and gets decent reviews.

Generally with you but the electric tin opener and grinders I bought me Mum have been a godsend for her elderly and arthritic hands. I sharpen her knives for her so they are still easy to use.
