So recently I have changed jobs where I can now walk to work so thinking of swapping my m140i to something more ‘special’. I want something exciting, fast, makes me feel good driving etc. Will be tracked maybe 4-6 times a year (but I don’t spank it round all day non stop) with hopefully a ‘ring trip as well.
Would like a bit of space for trips away with the mrs and I have a little dog with a car seat bed so back seats needed ideally.
My in laws live in Dumfries so a common trip is up there with mrs, dog and weeks worth of stuff but once dropped off have a decent car to go for a play in.

Will probably be less than 5k miles a year so running costs aren’t really to much of a concern except anything that may throw monster repair bills.
Iv always loved the GTR and keep coming back to those. Iv looked at m3/4 etc but feel it would just be similar to the m140 but quicker. Already had a c63.

Anything else I’m missing I should also look at?
Anyone made a similar move or have a GTR with any views?

Past recent cars for info, m140i, 204 c63, Impreza sti.

Edit to add budget is £50k max

Go for it they're a true drivers car & it sounds like it'll suit your needs, I'd look for the nicest Premium Edition you can find & if it's got a nice light tune on it even better.

Very nice Recaro model:

The only other option is a 997 Turbo & you'll be looking at an older less involving car:

Owned one for a couple of years so know the pro`s and cons`.

There are not really that many cons as such but if you show it a racetrack and drive it like it was designed you have to be a bit careful with regards the transmission temperature. Suggest you google it as if you go over a certain temperature it triggers the need to change the whole lot !! I lost count the amount of times I was having a play with a Porsche or similar and then had to bail because the temperatures started to creep up to the critical limits. I think the later cars had transmission coolers fitted but the aftermarket also did some bits. Depends how serious you take it. Mine was a `59 plate car.
The tyres and brakes will suffer alot on track and I ended up replacing my drilled discs which cracked with an AP equivalent that had grooves rather than drilled holes. The calliper is fine but I also upgraded the pads.
As for touring , it was superb. Took mine round Europe and spent plenty of time in the Alps. Be aware that anything you put in the boot will get cooked by the exhausts !!
I managed to get mine down to 6mpg on a Nurburgring trackday- One out lap, 2 quick ones and then one cooling down lap = one tank of fuel !!

Don’t be recommending any nice cars if a bloody dog is going to be travelling in it, sheesh!

laugh it’s only a french bulldog who lies well behaved in her bed. They’ll be no Great Danes after a day in the swamps getting in there!

Some good info there far cough, I’d read of the OE disk problems which is obviously and easy fix not read about the overheating issues il do a little more research although my usage, even on track I don’t think will be much of an issue as I only really do 15/20 mins then come back in for a bit as it’s always been my daily I’m in I stay quite sensible.

Forgot about the Alfa qv Iv always likes those especially in that darker red colour might go have a look at a few of those don’t think Iv ever seen many around here.

As lovely as the GTR is and something I'm aiming to own in the next few years I personally wouldn't want one to use on track. They are very fast and capable cars but can think of better 'track car'.

In terms of alternatives you have :
R8 v10
Alfa quadrifoglia
996 Turbo
997.1 Turbo
Waiting list for Lotus Emira
E63 s
F90 m5

My best bets would be V10 R8 or a Porsche

I can’t help much other than saying go for it!
I’d probably avoid the track work personally but fantastic cars none the less.

Iv looked at the Porsche turbos but they are either significantly more expensive or much higher mileage/ older than similar gtr.

Would love a v10 or v8 r8 but can’t get the dog in and much more limited on space so it would be left as almost a solo drive out car so not get used.

Last weekend a few of us went up to fort William for a weekend of mountain biking and walking and just two in my car the boot was full can’t imagine that would have been possible in an r8 or similar unfortunately.
