As far as I can see they dealt with the situation 100% correctly.

I would have thought the only thing they could have done formally on appointing the guy was a CRB check which wouldn't have thrown anything up. I don't think they would have access to MI5 records so like all job appointments there is an element of trust to the situation.

Full marks to the Guardian for being open about the situation.
