For example, 'lol' once meant 'lots of love' now means 'laugh out loud'. Bad news son, somebody died, lol
Ftw 'F**k the world' becomes 'For thin win' Had a Fast Car car come up behind me, lost him on the twisty bit w/out exceeding the limit ftw
There must be others...

LOL is an acronym because it can be pronounced as a word isn't it? Like SNAFU.

POS might stand for Point Of Sale, but to me it will always mean Piece Of st.

But LOL and SNAFU are. You don't say the first as "elle oh elle", but as "loll" (rhymes with doll). It can sometimes even be extended depending on usage. "Lollers" has a meaning directly related to "lol" and is a further extension of the slang.

SNAFU definitely isn't sounded out letter by letter either, it really is spoken as it looks, "snaffoo" and has become the recognised slang word in its own right for the acronym's meaning, similar to how the word radar (RADAR) has become an everyday word in general use.

PDA was snogging in the street before the Psion came out, so it's gone from snog to device and back to snog!

To an engineer VPN meant Vickers Pyramid Number - a measure of the hardness of metal. Now is Virtual Private Network.

The old meaning is so deeply embedded in my brain that when it's used in my current IT job I have to translate it!

LOL and SNAFU are. They are used as words, and as such are acronyms.

POS is usually pronounce Pee Ohh Ess, so that one's an initialism.

It's possible to be both as not everyone is consistent in their use.

As far as I am concerned lol has never meant lots of love. Ever. That sounds like something an old fossil person thought but we’re wrong.
