Should I buy a used GR Yaris?
Discussion
Edit: Oops. just seen the Yaris thread, I'll read through that.
Got my name down for the 2023 batch.
In the meantime, would it be ruinous to buy a low mileage used one over list? I hardly do any miles. Maybe I could run it for a year and sell before the new ones arrive?
It's either this, a type R or an RS Mk 3.
Just in case anybody asks: no family duties required.

I'm in the same sort of boat.
I currently have a mk3 focus RS and have been tempted to px for a yaris GR, just the looks of it don't do anything for me, I also think it's a bit of a sidestep as they are both very similar cars.
The mk3 RS is a great car, not that quick in a straight line due to its 1500kg kerbweight, but the twinster awd set makes it a great drive, the front end is so pointy and the rear end is very playful, great fun on a wet B road! Saying that it will get sideways in the dry!
Suspension is very firm even in the normal non stiffened setting, it starts to make more sense the faster you go, where it becomes very well damped and progressive. The handling and cornering ability of it never fails to amaze me. Its my 3rd vehicle so not sure I would want to run it everyday.
Fuel economy is appalling, but that's probably because I drive it hard, I did see 36 mpg on a 200 mile motorway run, but that was with cruise control and no deviation from 70mph! Think my average over 3600 miles is 21.6 mpg
Mine also seems to get a lot of attention, especially in nitrous blue, people commenting on the colour asking if they can take a picture, bit embarrassing at times as it's only a Ford focus!
The problem you will have with an RS is the strong residuals, I paid 26,500 for mine 2 years ago, its now worth around £31,000. All depends whether you can stomach that much on a near 5 year old car.

Ive just bought a used one, had it a week and love it! Came from a BMW Z4 m40i which was incredibly capable and fast but dull. Sold it to WBAC for what I bought it for 15 months and 12000 miles ago.
I hadn’t really heard of the GR until 2 weeks ago. Wish I had ordered new for the cheaper price and 0% but hindsight’s a wonderful thing.

I find it hard to imagine GR Yaris prices staying high until 2023 - supply is restricted now but by then will have caught up with demand, the general bubble will be on its way down. So yes I think you'd lose quite a bit if you pay over the new price now, and then sell a 3yo car in 2023 in a market where new ones will likely be freely available at list price.
The CTR also has sky-high values right now, it'll depend on how the next generation matches up whether those will drop or stay highish by 2023.
Personally if you've got a GR Yaris on order I'd suggest trying something different right now, if you don't need to carry more than two people it would seem like a chance to have a sports car or something for a bit?

I'm in an old z4 at the minute and only occasionally need the use of an old Polo for tip duties and the like. I want to reduce to one car due to the tiny mileage I cover. The CTR also has sky-high values right now, it'll depend on how the next generation matches up whether those will drop or stay highish by 2023.

I saw an owner's review where the back seats were folded flat in the Yaris and it looked like a useful enough space.
CTR - my thoughts exactly.
Focus RS - more usable space. See how well I get on with the AWD. Low mileage dealer stock is close to Yaris. Residuals a mystery to me.
Yaris - would be an ideal audition. Might even just keep it!?
Golf R would be the sensible option under 20k.
Thanks for the helpful replies btw.
