I currently have a 2018 Leon FR which replaced a 2012 Octavia vRS. Both use 18" wheels with 225/40-18 tyres with same bolt pattern & offset. Currently the Leon has its original Conti summer tyres although the front 2 are close to needing replacement.
When I bought the vRS in 2013 I also bought a set of Dezent RE 17x7 wheels shod with Nokian WR 225/45-17 winter tyres & these are also used on the Leon.
My winter tyres are now 8 years old with 3.5-4mm tread left. When not on the car the winter tyres/wheels are on a tyre stand, under a cover, in our garage. However 1 winter wheel was destroyed by a pothole.

So my choices are:

1 Buy another Dezent wheel & 4 new 17" winter tyres + 2 new 18" summer tyres.
Swap wheels/tyres over 2x a year.

2 Buy 4 Michelin Crossclimate 225/40-18" tyres.
Sell 3 winter wheels & 2 part-worn Conti tyres. Use same wheels/tyres all year round.

Option 2 obviously requires less outlay but option 1 gives my 2 sets of wheels & hence approx twice the time before tyre purchase needed again.

Opinions, please, on best course of action.

Depends where you live.
If severe snow is normal then maybe the winter tyre option is worth re-investing.
If its a normal UK winter for you with only the odd day or two of snow and the rest of the winter wet and cold, then maybe all seasons would be a better choice.

All season means your nice wheels get to enjoy annual salt baths.

Or if you're not bothered too much which wheels are fitted in your ownership, you could always buy another Dezent wheel and fit new all seaosn to the 17" set, and enjoy a slightly better ride.
This would see the 18" set in pristine condition when and if you decide to replace the car.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of that 3rd option as you suggested - use the Dezent wheels (+ a new one) with Crossclimate tyres & store the original wheels.
However the Dezent 17" wheels are not so robust as the 18" OEM wheels on our pot-holed roads dispite the slightly higher profile tyres fitted.

I live in Gloucestershire but do travel to Keswick & Sheffield during the winter. I also find winter tyres give better grip & braking during winter's lower temperatures, particularly on wet roads. Obviously better on snow, even if the changes of that are low.
