I'd be grateful of some steerage on this. I want to buy a domain for the purposes of a "forever" email address.

This is really complicated. I have kind of got it working.

I bought the domain. I found the carefully hidden place to adjust the Mx settings that forwarded any email to another account.

After that, any email send to "whatever@mydomain.com" ended up on my PC in Outlook. Which is what I want. I used a yahoo email account that I had already set up in the outlook client for the purposes of this experiment.

Sending an email, as coming from the domain seems a lot harder. I think I need to

-Set up a gmail account as the proxy account
-Forward the MX settings to the gmail account
-Set up the gmail account to launder messages so they appear to have been sent from "something@mydomain.com"
-set the gmail account up in outlook on my desktop.

Does that sound right, or is there an easier way that doesn't involve paying £6 a month per email account to godaddy or someone.

In the meantime, because I was offline for a few days and didn't respond to their weird emails asking for a scan of my passport, godaddy suspended my domain and refunded me. So I am back to square 1 on this project.

Got Microsoft 365?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/get-a-p...

Manual setup of sending email can be a bit tricky as you have to get things like spf records right or recipients will see your domain being sent by gmail and bit it as spoofed address spam.

All I can advise here is not to use GoDaddy under any circumstances

At the moment, we only support connecting domains managed by GoDaddy with Outlook.com.
Doh!

They do seem like utter fools.

mail is hard.
Getting it mostly right is easy, but email that is mostly well delivered / received is pretty awful, which is why anyone with any sense uses an email service provider. If you use your own domain then free options are pretty much out.
If it is just for you and you don't need more than about 20 alias then you can run it all out of a single google workspace account that will cost you about £5 a month for a basic package.

Can't remember exactly how I did it, but for me it was a case of using the admin access on my domain to set up the email addresses, and then setting up Outlook with the correct protocols to both send and receive mail. I certainly didn't need to set up a proxy mail server with Gmail or anyopne like that.

By far your easiest option is to pay for an email service as well as the domain name. Then it'll all just work without having to bugger about with MX records or gmail or anything.

I pay £15 a year for 10 inboxes which seems well worth it for the lack of hassle.

That would work. Who is that with?

I do it with gmail like this: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/22370?hl=en...

In Settings > Accounts and Import > Send Mail As, I added another one with my domain email, sending via the secured SMTP server that my domain host provided. I made that the default for sending mail.

On iPhone I do have to use the gmail app rather than the native mail app, I don't think the latter understands these settings and sends as my gmail address.

I pay £15 a year for the mail forwarding / SMTP stuff from my domain host, on top of the domain renewal fees.

If you pay for additional iCloud storage Apple includes email hosting now.

Or just pay for Google apps/Office 365 etc

That's what I have also done (on two different domains via two different domain hosts) - simply follow their instructions - dead simple. One of my domains is via TSOHost and its instructions are:

I didn't know about them adding it to iCloud+ that is quite a big feature. I hope Google one follows this

Has anyone used icloud+ without an iphone / mac?
is it feasible? because this seems like it could be the best and far cheapest option at less than £1 a month for the lowest plan.

I am considering giving it a go as i have been trying to move away from my domain that is on the legacy google apps free tier.

Well that was a short lived idea.
You cannot sign up to icloud+ without an apple device.
haven't they ever heard the phrase shut up and take my money ?
But icloud mail seems to be fairly poor experience on android, so it wouldn't have been great anyway.

FWIW it doesn't seem tone as fully featured as the Google apps set up. I still have my main domains on a legacy free account. I have moved my kids domains over to iCloud+ and it seems fine for basic email.
