Budapest – don’t bother

I don’t know why I did. How the hell did this place get its reputation as one of the premier destination cities in Europe? What a dump.

I’ve now spent my second weekend in this place through work. I’ve had better nights out in Uxbridge.

Restaurants: my first choice was hired out for a wedding – OK – and my second choice was closed for summer. Clubs: Home and Pascha were both closed – in July FFS!

Walking down Vaci Ucta I got asked about six times for a cigarette by hookers trying to drag me into some clip joint. I ended up asking a cabbie to take me somewhere and he took me to some gay bar! I then when on somewhere else and ended up in a bar full of Brit blokes on stag nights.

Do yourself a favour. If you find yourself stuck in Budapest for a weekend get yourself over to Prague or Vienna.

There's a lot more if you include the types which charge 60 quid for a beer with "obligitary" female company

Second thoughts maybe your better off there,ive just recalled the nicknames for the 2 clubs here ,"Jurasic Park" and "Marwell Zoo"

Hey ho its all paid for - its more the company that will make it memorable - being stuck in a foreign city on your tod can be v dull.

1st visit - Wife's IT gear was impounded by corrupt customs officals, required $,000s to release.

2nd vists - The wife and I got robbed in the street, pestered by students, the drivers are maniacs, the hoel and food were pretty dreadful, the shops full of tat.

Don't think we will be going back soon!

Well anything is only as good as you make it and I guess if you’re with good company you’ll have a good time. However, I don’t think Budapest lives up to its reputation as a premier European “destination city” – which is what it sells itself as. Certainly it can’t compare to London, Amsterdam or Paris.

The overwhelming feeling I had was that everyone I came into contact with was out to take as much money off me as possible. I guess it gets its reputation as a stag / boozy weekend destination with the Brits and most of the time they’re probably too drunk to take in the reality of the place. I suppose it’s also got a certain novelty value since it’s only been easily accessible to tourists since then end of the cold war.

There are some good restaurants though so it’s not all bad.

I had a good time when i went some 18 years ago, but then i was a student and in the company of 19 other english students, plus 20 Hungarian students, who were all fluent in English.

Debrecen is a pleasant city (well, it was when i went).

i have been to budapest.
the girls there seem well geared up to take lots of money off stupid western males.
maybe some posts here reflect battered male egos.
