Drop links, inner tie rods or track rod ends

Usually the drop links; they have a nylon bush in them and when that fails; its metal on metal. But hard to suss out when they're fitted as they appear nice and tight still

Deffo worth replacing them; they're not expensive and its peace of mind

Same with the inner tie rods & track rod ends too; I've just replaced all these on my 730D; went for Moog and it was £100 for all 6 items!

If it was drop links etc wouldn’t it only make the noise depending on which side was on the bumps? Unless it’s the odd chance where both sides has gone, right side is a louder knocking compared to the left which is still knocking just not as loud

Drop links transfer the difference between wheel height across the car by the antiroll bar, if you think about it - - so a bump on the 'good' side still takes up/ transitions across any play on the 'bad' side.

I agree with poster above on this, its easy and cheap to change/make known-good.

Nope; it's metal on. metal, it travels.

Can sound bad one side, not the other, but both can have failed etc...

As said; they're cheap to swap out, so I'd do just that and see how you get on smile

Do they have to be OEM parts or can I just take it a reputable garage? Or should I best of going to a bmw specialist?

Heck no...

As said above, I've gone with Moog. They're well made and well warranted.

It's them, Meyle or Lemforder that I use personally.

Source them yourself from your local motorfactors and ask your indy garage to fit them, or ask your local indy garage to source & fit them. It'll be an hours labour max

But ask them to give the track rod ends a good look over too
