A bit of an oddity - 1987 and Dickie (World of Sport) Davies is interviewing staff at Thornaby yard about their work. He's then seen discussing the Class 59 and the Foster Yeoman quarry flows.

Also, a really nostalgic piece showing a Class 20, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Pickfords heavy haulage and some really evocative scenery. Transport and installation of a 120 ton Ferranti transformer. All the way back to 1962.

First one takes me back, I did part of my graduate training at Thornaby in 1982.

During that time I was on call with the Tool Van (breakdown crane), which was an accomodation coach, the steam crane and one (may have been 2) carriage sized vans full of timber packings and lifting gear - packing up the crane before a lift was hard work.

It was just before the steam cranes were withdrawn even though the crew preferred their 65 T Steam Crane to the 75 T Diesel crane that they had in Gateshead - when they needed two cranes to re-rail a vehicle they worked together and a Class 46 was about capacity for the two cranes, it was the diesel crane that struggled not the much older and lower rated steam crane.
