Hiya

After suggestions of cheap old run abouts with high mileage returns, old Peugeot’s and Citroen’s spring to mind. I’ve done the veg oil thing and there’s no real difference in that any more.
So yeah cheap cheerful economical suggestions please 👍

£0 road tax, 85 mpg, insurance group 10, reliable

Except for the purchase price, it's hardly a cheap old runabout. Think the OP is thinking 500 quid mk1 Focus or similar, not a 6 grand hybrid.

Four years ago I bought a 2007 Renault Megane 1.5 DCi for £1200. The road tax is £30 a year and it will easily do 60MPG on a run, best I have ever seen in an indicated 72MPG.

Tyres are 205/55/16 so cheap, oil and air filter is £10, set of Bosch glow plugs cost me £23, rear brake pads £10 etc.

In 40K miles all I have spent on it is a set of tyres, annual services, front and rear pads, wiper blades, a set of glow plugs and a new Battery.

I would honestly be surprised if you could find anything that was cheaper to run by any worthwhile margin.

Range ro... Oh sorry misread the title. A friend had a Mustang on finance the dealer bought it back recently at 2 year old for the same as he paid. Can't get much cheaper to run a newish car.

He said cheapest to run, not cheapest to buy.

I'll summarise the thread for you:

Buy on condition and history, not mileage or price. Make n model not important.

All the best sheds ones are getting on a bit now (late 1990s Jap saloons/Hatches like Primera, 626, Civics) and getting in to the rust/parts era. However still some gooduns about if you look... Mainly Automatic old man "Motability" Nissan Almeras that have had a service every 6 months, a million new parts and covered 15,000 miles in 25 years. Just that you have to put up with an Almera...

Something like an Aygo/C1/!07 which is simple, economic and unlikely to throw up a big bill would suit a commuter car if not too much of that is motorway (noisy).

A shed might be more suitable if you have a backup car and can have it in the garage or on the drive being repaired.
