Anti-clockwise for me rather than widdershins. Obviously it’s dependent upon the handing of the teaspoon to ensure optimal vortex velocity versus fluid viscosity though so each situation should be judged on it’s own merits.

Though Mrs C was watching one of those recent TV shows about very posh hotels, and a slightly effete "etiquette expert" insisted that instead of a circular motion the teaspoon should be moved backwards and forwards in a straight line from one side of the cup to the other.

Probably a bit retarded, but to ensure a good stir and mix, I always spin up to a good speed clockwise, then do an emergency reverse with the spoon and get it going anticlockwise

The little sloshy sploshy noise as it attempts to change direction is most gratifying

A “J” stroke with the left hand with a parabola on depth through the stir.

Optimises the fluid dynamics for milk to tea combination.

As recommended in the Boulder, Smith and Shaw paper in the Tea Drinker’s Almanac 1973.

I do not take milk in my coffee so cannot comment further.

Clockwise a few goes then anticlockwise to cause turbulence and really ensure the sugar is picked off the bottom and mixed then clockwise again.

I’ve recently gone milkless, but;
Stir the tea vigorously clockwise to cause a vortex.
Gently pour milk into centre.
Let it settle & then one final stir.
( invest in a bag squeezer to...)

If making a pot: Stir the bags after you’ve added the hot ( not boiling) water & a quick shake before pouring.
Leave the bags in the pot for the day... the final brews are nice & strong then.

Wonder if left handers & those in the Southern Hemisphere stir
