Prime Minister Boris Johnson has just announced city status for Southend, in honour of Sir David Amess..

The most fitting of tributes of a life so needlessly lost.....

I wonder where they'll draw the limits as it's just one massive sprawl now.

A fitting tribute indeed for a man who offered so much to his constituents and beyond. Excellent.

Looks like it was already sort of planned as a consideration

It’s a fitting tribute as the MP was a strong supporter smile

Does that Batley will be a city also? Don’t think so, it’s up north so it can get to fk.

Edit: sorry, not taking anything away from the horrendous event. Just there is a world outside the south east.

Another edit, I’ll get my coat,,.

Amess had been campaigning for ages to get city status for sarfend whereas I don't think Jo had been for Batley. Neither really warrant it to be fair but it's a nice gesture nonetheless

I remember it as a bit of promenade with some amusement arcades. Maybe its changed.
City status means you get more funding or something as far as I know. Wonder where the money will be taken away from?
Boris is like a twitching frog leg on a jolt of electricity for policy.

It's a sad situation but what on earth does giving this place city status achieve.

I doubt most people had heard of it before Friday.

I would think that some public funding is awarded to cities that isn’t awarded to towns.

Still waiting to see what the Brighton one will look like! Seems it isn’t a requirement these days.

Main change seemed to be a jump in house prices.

Makes sense on funding, but thats funding being taken away from run down places in Essex like Jaywick and Brentwood LOL

Southend is a unitary authority. Their funding is totally separate from the rest of Essex.

All it means is a lot of expense rebranding all their paperwork, hih-viz jackets, works vans, "Welcome to" signs etc etc.

(Jaywick has probably had more "money per resident" spent on it than almost anywhere else in Essex in the last 5 years!)
