I tried to start the car, ign. on ok but everything off when I turned the key to start. I tried again and it started but battery voltage went very high 15v+. turned off and restarted, now ok; if the battery switch is going faulty and disconnected the battery while engine is running would this let the voltage rise? cheers, John.

You're measuring alternator output, not battery voltage.

With engine running you should usually be looking at, say, 13.5 to 14.8 volts. Some cars may go as high as 15.

But then there's the question of how accurate the car's voltage instrument is or isn't. If you're worried, check it with a proper voltmeter.

If the battery wasn't connected you'd probably get a high voltage reading. Bad idea to run without a battery.

Thanks voram, I turned the engine off as soon as I saw the voltmeter over 15v, normally 14v only.

Problem sorted, loose connection on switch.
