Couple fined for not being in a Bus Lane.

I wonder if this will cause a spate of silliness with people waking in bus lanes holding number plates across their chest?

I wondered that....personally I think it challenges the whole camera system doesn't it?

I’m waiting for the owner of the van to be prosecuted for his drug dealer plates next time he’s out and about.

On the PCN; "You must not ignore this letter or pass it to the driver" - why would you NOT pass it to the person driving, if that wasn't the RK?!

It may render the argument of poorly spaced digits on number plates redundant given the system identified a knitted jumper with a word partially obscured by a handbag strap as a recognisable valid number and issued a ticket to the RK.

..because it tells you on the letter not to?

Because the RK is responsible for naming the driver/wearer, not the driver themselves. If it was passed to the driver and they didn't respond then the RK would be on the hook.

I've often thought it would cause havoc wearing "reg plate" clothes, and/or plastering the back of your vehicle with lots of random letters on a yellow background - still showing the legal plate but camouflage it with surrounding graphics

I've wondered the same. I presume that while you have to display the correct registration number for your vehicle then you are also only allowed to display one registration number - i.e. sticking ten plates on the back, one of which is correct, wouldn't be allowed.

Wouldn't that simply be covered by "Displaying incorrect registration mark for vehicle" just the same as having a single cloned registration plate?

There is a stage beyond this, many years ago I lived in a city where they fitted radar controlled traffic light cameras. On the way home from the bar it was customary for a group to to stand in the junction with trousers lowered whilst an accomplice waved a suitable piece of steel infront of the bollard until it flashed. Kids today would just be wasting their time on the internet.

DM commenters: "Whaa the council/police should have to issue NIP letters with guaranteed delivery (and receipt signed and witnessed by Lawyer of choice) within 14 days including tracking down where they actually live because the keeper details are wrong or a lease company etc, otherwise can't possibly be expected to know who was driving"

and also

"Whaa, they issue NIP's automatically because the timelines are too tight to manually validate and there being a standard procedure for informing them they are wrong"

Want them to validate every single one; Fine; Make the NIP deadline 3 months instead of 14 days (still far less than other time limits on charging) and increase the fines by a few £100 to cover the additional admin costs. What, you would rather spend 10 minutes pointing out that the anpr has gone wrong and it is a jogger not a car once in your life than pay 2-3x as much in fixed penalties on average...

I guess that's the question; if you have the correct plate as well as a number of incorrect ones then what is the offence? You would be displaying an incorrect registration mark but would also be displaying the correct one.

(I hasten to add that this is a whimsical thought, it's not something I am planning on doing!)

I see another avenue here: display your correct plate and by it have your mis-spaced funny font vanity plate. Best of both worlds?

Certainly for a few years used cars on transporters have had the visible plates taped over.

There is a yellow VW Transporter van near me, which has the rear doors completely covered in black vinyl letters and numbers depicting fictitious registration numbers, in the same font as a number plate.

It still has the standard plate in the correct place, but the rest of the rear is jam packed with the random letters and numbers designed to look like other number plates.

I guess there is no law against decorating your car or van in black vinyl letters and numbers?
