Masks on TfL (not an option)

Not sure about ‘selfish minority’. I was in London on Sunday for the NFL game and would say around 75% of my fellow tube travelers were maskless. As an aside, once inside Tottenham’s ground I’d say that figure rose to upwards of 95%.

Didn't the requirement end on 19 July 2021? Isn't the story about prosecutions catching up with those who were issued penalties before that time?


EDIT: I see it is still a condition of carriage - but they can't issue a fine.
Not arguing against it - some tubes must be a breading ground for all sorts - masks are probably a good plan.

As safe as it can be right now, will all the mask wearers be wearing them forever more "just in case"? The irony of keeping others safe seems to be lost on the ones walking on their own in the parks

I know of a coven of PHers who will be outraged that they could be fined for deciding not wearing a mask, if requested to do so.

And god help anyone who openly questions their opinion (on anything).

The requirement is still in place on TFL. Like the poster above said though huge numbers of people are ignoring it

It stopped being a legal requirement, but TfL continue to require it as a "condition of carriage". My experience of travelling is similar to the poster above though - the "minority" appear to be those wearing masks so the numbers in the article seem very small!

Personally I think it is time to drop the ineffective /virtue signalling masks. Those that are shielding can continue to wear them (or stay at home). Look at the efficacy of the masks - blue surgical masks have holes 1,000 times bigger than the virus and home made jobs more like 5,000 times bigger.

I have not read what effect wearing the same one again and again does to their efficiency of operation but at GBP 10 for three in some places I cannot imagine that most of those on low incomes are changing their mask every day.

It is time to move on and allow the young and healthy to crack on with their lives. I should add that I am entering the danger zone - age wise.

Get average daily entry numbers for Acton Town .. M-Thu 10,091 (*4); F 10,240; Sat 7,449; Sun 5,187 = 63,240 entries per week at Acton Town

Weeks since 19 July 21 to today .. 13 weeks.

Estimated total number of entries at Acton Town since 19 July 21 .. 822,120

BUT factor in Covid effect on 2021 travel .. down to 50% of pre-Covid passenger numbers

So it's reasonable to suggest that a decent estimate of number of entries at Acton Town since 19 July 21 is (822,120 / 2) 411,060

And across the whole network 304 people (entries) have been stopped for not wearing a mask on "boarding a TfL service or entering a TfL station".

It doesn't strike me as being enforced with any kind of rigour, given anecdotally the majority are travelling sans mask

Its not being enforced at all based on my experience over the weekend. It just allows Khan to virtue signal.

I noticed a sharp rise in the people wearing masks in general out and about yesterday than I did on Monday. I guess all this talk in the media of "plan B" and rising cases is making some people wear them again, misguided or not as the case me be.

A few weeks back I spent a couple of days doing touristy type stuff in london with my sister and over 75% were not wearing masks on tubes or buses in my experience. We went thinking it would be rigidly enforced to find the opposite.

Well, I'm probably one of that 'coven' in that case. I do think it is outrageous to mandate the wearing of face coverings when there is no proof that they make a significant difference. Perhaps FFP grade masks might be effective, but home made coverings or bits of cloth do nothing much.

It appears that we disagree, Tommo, but you won't need God's protection from me just for having an opposing opinion! It's a discussion forum, after all.

Fortunately, financial penalties for not wearing a face covering in England disappeared on July 19th, including on TFL. Long may it continue.

Why do surgeons brother to wear them then?

The virus doesn’t float around by itself. It is suspended in droplets of split if someone sneezes, coughs or just talks - Which a mask is hugely effective at combating.

I think you miss my point. I am sure somewhere they may be masks even cheaper than 'amazing' Amazon. Perhaps suggest the NHS buy from your preferred supplier.

In short if you are meeting a friend for coffee and realise that you have left the house without one you cannot wait for Amazon to turn up with a cheap mask. More to the point who vets the quality of all these masks on sale - nobody. You may as well stick a Financial Times in front of your face.

I have not idea why a "surgeons brother" would wear a mask even in "Split" (Croatia) but grammar aside I think you need to look at the type of mask a surgeon wears. It is not a stupid blue one that most of the public wear and nor is it a home made job. I would suggest that the efficacy of the ones surgeons wear is a lot higher than 'Joe Publics'.

I've been travelling on the tube throughout the pandemic. Happy to wear a mask. It is a breading ground for all types of decease, horrible filthy place to be.

Yes there are less and less travellers wearing masks. These are the same travellers who pick their noses then hold the hand rails, same ones who rub their eyes and the hold the escalator hand rail. Same people who think it's ok to eat their lunch in a tube. Dirty filthy people who don't care about themselves or others.

The other day a lady lifted up her mask to cough. Watched one fella , who was wearing a mask, take his hand off the hand rail, pick his nose under his mask, then hold the rail again.
