Very sad news today, with ex-Labour MP Lord Field revealing he has a terminal illness: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2021/oct...

In a time of highly polarised and inconsiderate politics, Field is a figure held in very high regard across an extremely wide political spectrum. There's more than a few in politics could learn something from his conduct.

It is ironic and unfortunate that he is not going to be able to participate in the debate on assisted dying, a subject on which he has very firm opinions.

Best wishes to him.

Indeed, and those who garner respect regardless of whether you agree with their political stance are increasingly hard to find

A decent honourable man to whom I wish peace and tranquillity in his remaining time with us

Lord Field , certainly a highly respected Member within the House, and for good reason.
I have been and remain a supporter of what will likely be his last campaign.

Very sad news. A truly honourable and very knowledgeable man who put the needs of the country above party politics. A pity there are so few of his ilk around today. Heaven knows, we need more like him.

Pragmatism and a lack of dogma and ego are sadly lacking in too many involved in the broader political and governmental arena. It's a shame, because many of those hell bent on self-promotion and empire should perhaps reflect on the fact that the very greatest way to earn respect and leave a lasting legacy is to be decent, fair and even handed.

Didn’t Blair ask him to review pensions, then promptly ignore his advice?

Sad that he should be ailing, glad his words were spoken for him in the Lords today. One politician who you’d always listen to.

One of a tiny minority whom I hold in high regard, and head and shoulders above the rest.

It was welfare.

He was appointed minister for welfare reform and then all his recommendations were ignored. From what I can gather he wanted more generous contribution based benefits so the welfare system operated more as a safety net.

He's a good guy. A man of integrity and decency who puts justice and sticking up for normal people first.

His work on Sir Phillip Green and way back when on Robert Maxwell's shambles was a masterclass in HoC Committee Chairmanship

Erm he's not dead yet.

Though if he had his way I suspect he might choose to be which is why I believe he's in the news.

Despite changing his mind after a stay in a hospice. Fair play to him which confirms the comments of others that he was one of the good guys - a politician who was prepared to change his mind based on the evidence.

I find Robert Maxwell fascinating and have read numerous books on him and his transgressions; here is some footage of the select committee with Frank Field, Kevin and Ian Maxwell, and a young looking Jeremy Corbyn..
